So I just went and watched some gameplay footage for the all the games and heres what I thnk.
Brink
It's surprisingly good looking, but it looks good because it's extremely well stylized and fast. It's going to be the better looking Borderlands of 2011, which means it's going to look great, but it's not going to brought up alot in graphics discussions a year from now.
Rage
Is extremely inconsistent. It sometimes likes fantastic and then it sometimes falls flat and I think that's mainly because it's an open world game. People keep bringing it up in discussions, but based on the footage I've seen, it's not blowing me away. It really just feels like a graphical leap for Fallout 3, but it doesn't feel like a graphical leap compared to some of the games that have been released in the last couple of years.
Uncharted 2
I haven't seen enough footage to come to a conclusion.
Gears of War 3
I gave Gears the most of my time (mainly because it's the game I'm the most interested in playing), but I still wouldn't go all crazy about how it looks. I'll mention the positives first. The multi-player gameplay looks really good, it actually looks better than Uncharted 2 in multi-player and it looks very similar to it's campaign. The environments do look better than it's predecessors, the enemies look really detailed and the it looks much more colourful.
My problem is that I've still seen better games, people will jumpt to Uncharted 2 for comparison, but Gears reminds me a lot more of God of War 3 when it comes to style, character models and enemies. I personally still think that God of War 3 still looks much better. The character detail, the detail on the enemies, the environments (though Gears has much more vegetation, the ground textures and the animation all look better in God of War3.
I think Gears of War 3 will surprise us when it releases, it still has heaps of time to come out and it's got some very talented people working on it. As of now, it's not better looking than the other games being released or have already released.
Killzone 3
Killzone 3 is a hard game to pinpoint, because I don't know if it's how it looks that keeps blowing me away or if it's just a combination of the atmosphere, the great sound effects, the particle effects, the animation and the art style. I doubt anyone would argue that Killzone 3 is definitely going to be within the top 3 next year, with game journalist going crazy over how it looks, with the gameplay footage actually looking better and better as they release and with Killzones history, it's hard not to come to that conclusion.
I still have some faults though. The game has the exact same colours as Killzone 2, they promise that Killzone 3 will include jungle environments, but I honestly wouldn't be surprised if the trees are grey and the flowers are a light shade of dark grey. The facial detail on the characters still need some work, I haven't seen any in motion yet (outside of dodgy phone footage) but it still looks kind of bland in comparison to games like Enslaved, Uncharted 2 and God of War 3.
Bulletstorm
It looks like a slightly better Resistance 2, with a better art style and animations. It shouldn't be on the list.
Crysis 2
They may be the best PC developer when it comes to graphics, but that doesn't automatically make you the best console developer. I haven't really been impressed by what I've seen so far, it might be that it's blandness overshadows it's technical merit, but I can't really decide.
Resistance 3
If you had said that Resisitance 3 would have been a contender a month ago, I would have called you crazy, but the VGA footage blew me away. I don't think it's going to be the best looking game from a technical stand point, but it still looked fantastic. I still don't think that Resistance 3 will be among the top 3 when it comes to graphics next year, but with a years worth of development and with Insomniac being a very talented team, they might prove me wrong.
Bet with Conegamer and AussieGecko that the PS3 will have more exclusives in 2011 than the Wii or 360... or something.
