I have my doubts that a non-PS3 optimised engine can out do the first party PS3 engines for graphics on PS3, and I have my doubts that 360 optimised engines playing on a 360 can outdo Sony first party engines on PS3. I also have my doubts that a multiplat can outdo an exclusive on either console. Best Graphics of the generation on 360 and PS3 so far go to [console] exclusive games. I can't see that changing.
It'll be interesting to see Gear matched up with the PS3 heavy hitters. IIRC this will be the first time a Gears game has launched in the same year as a KZ or an Uncharted. So there won't be any "oh it's been a year since that released, you've got to expect it to look better" excuses for anyone.
Footage I've seen of Bulletstorm don't look like they will compete with the big console exclusives. I haven't seen enough of Rage to really say one way or another. I thought Crysis 2 looked pretty darned sweet, but that was ages ago, and I get the feeling Crysis 2 had it's window of opportunity to be crowned console graphics king in 2010. 2011 games have the potential to move past Crysis 2 and leave it wondering what might have been, if only it had released a year earlier. Honestly I think Crytek have dropped the ball big time by waiting so long in the console generaqtion to get their engine into a real life game. The rate it's going the next Unreal engine will be out and it will have leapfrogged Cryengine 3 to remain the proprietary game engine of choice. Is Gears using the next Unreal engine?
