If it's 576p then it only needs to push aroun 65% of pixels PS3 can if it's 480p only 45% of PS3 power would be needed. (IIRC 800x480 screens are current standard for high end smartphones?)
Now let's look at Samsung Galaxy S or Iphone 4 - those can already push really serious graphics. Now those phones cost 500 euro BUT PSP2 won't be released before late 2011/early 2012 probably so according to Moore's laws cost of making cpus and gpus for them wil be halved by that time. AND those are smartphones - Samsung has no way on profiting from sales of software on Galaxy S which means they must profit on every piece sold. Now Sony is in much diffrent position - they will benefit from all software sold for PSP2 as well as they might be able to benefit from on-line services (digital movie rentals, music store etc.) so they can afford to sell PSP2 at minimal profit in starting period. I'd estimate that 250-300 euro starting price will be reached without problems which will put it at 3DS levels or slightly above. |
standard is 800*480 but the iPhone 4g is 960 × 640 and I expect the PSP 2 to at least match that TBH and rumours have suggested that it has a "HD" screen that could mean a 720p screen but I doubt it. The high pixel density should at least mean that AA etc is not needed as much as on a TV if at all. And games can of course be rendered at a lower resolution and upscaled...
