I haven't played it, but I thought Valkyria Chronicles was an RPG. or was it a strategy game.

Oh it's definitely a SRPG, but it's also definitely not 1st party. :P

And Super Paper Mario is in no way or form a RPG   O.o

Take it from someone who's completed the game, yes it is.  In fact, it's more of an RPG than a platformer, the emphasis is squarely on grinding, subsystems and exploration (just like Paper Mario 1-2), only now everything's realtime.

But the gameplay is nowhere near a RPG.

it's a strategy RPG hybrid, but it was published by SEGA, hence not 1st party

As for my vote, I'm sure in a years time, it will be hard to deny that Nintendo wins.  As for now, I think it's a 3 way tie between them.

Uh, have you played it?  All it did is take Paper Mario and make it realtime without a separate battle screen, the structure, subsystems and progression are definitely RPG based.  Basically, if Paper Mario's not an RPG, then neither is any action RPG on the list (Fable II/III, Infinite Undiscovery, Folklore, etc).

You missed out Valkyria Chronicles, 3D dot game heroes and Yakuza on ps3.

Add them please!

"All it did is take Paper Mario and make it realtime"

Thus making it a whole other game and genre. The gameplay is much closer to the platformer genre.

And of course I played it. It's my biggest disappointment this gen.

I would agree that SPM is an RPG, but can't we all compromise and just call it a Platformer-RPG hybrid

Hard to say, since a lot aren't out yet. By as of right now the last story and xenoblade are going to have to be really good to upstage Demons souls, which is one of the few classics of this generation.
