IMO Kinect sold well because of hype, this usually works especially well for the United States. A strategy Microsoft seems to have been perfecting over the years and they understand the weaknesses of the US consumer second to none.

You also saw this with Halo 3, a short game IMO not much of a challenge to finish, graphically underwhelming and a non-default online multi-player you as well as all your gaming buddies have to pay extra for each month/year. Still it got near perfect reviews from the US media, this while it was clearly very far from a near perfect game.

Similarly Kinect was hyped by especially the US media when Microsoft revealed their fake Milo demonstration. I myself also complimented Microsoft on its achievements not knowing at the time it was just a cheap fake. Regardless Kinect/Natal got so much overhype, beyond believe, hyping it as the "future ", revolutionary (Milo) and the next most amazing thing in gaming. That's why I stated back then, many months before Microsoft actually launched Kinect it was already geared towards commercial success (despite I already knew it was predominately based on a fake demo), because of the massive overhype by especially the US media and 360 fans.

Kinect of course isn't the future, but of course, just like Kinect and Playstation Eye (as well as Nintendo Wii / Playstation Move) are inspired by pioneering through the Eyetoy (remember minigames such as Eye Sports, Eye Play, Kinectics, etc), there will some day be products which include Kinect-like features, but actually works as advertised.

Here in Europe Kinect has been much less successful and as predicted is a non-factor in Japan. IMO the Kinect hype will not survive until next holiday season.

I'm sorry I would give Sony the benefit of the doubt if they rarely known to bash competitors like this, but they seem to do it all the time when they are trailing pathetically behind with MOVE sales! Its so sad how they resort to this kind of DETAILED kinect-bashing! I mean to compare their MOVE controller (WiiMote) to the Kinect, its pathetic! I've played the MOVE in Best Buy and its laggy as hell!!

The Kinect has just been released, and I have no such problems, even in small areas! I just cannot wait to see the potential for this peripheral! MS are even planning to QUADRUPLE the amount of data that runs through the device, increasing its speed like crazy! All that technical stuff is clearly a load of crap to influence weak minded readers that what he is saying is actually true. He's just getting paid by Sony to say alot of crap. Its amazing how Sony are just top dogs at doing this kind of bashing in comparison to other companies! Shame on u!!!!

Must be hard for this Sony Rep. to explain why Kinect has sold 5X as many units then the PS Move.

So if Kinect is this garbage Technology that has all these bugs and problems and the PS move is far Superior (even if they look like sex toys), but then why does Kinect have such a giant sales lead on the Move when the Move launched a month early.

I guess I would rather have the Garbage product that has garbage trucks hauling in money to the bank...Then be the owners of the Sleek, but no one buys it Playstation Move (Wii HD Kit).

But, hey thats just me. From a sales stand point...You can knock the Kinect all you want, but if its kicking you products A$$ at the retail you may want to keep that on the down low.

This is just another example of someone at Sony that simply doesn't get it.  Microsoft's goal with Kinect was to make a controller interface that would be more accessible to the casual audience and that would give unique and attractive experiencs that people couldn't get elsewhere.  In short Microsoft used the lessons learned from the Wii in their motion controller solution.

People can quote response times and accuracy but that simply doesn't matter as long as the solution is adequate for the audience and types of games it was made for.  As for bringing up core games does anyone looking at Kinect's launch lineup and advertising really think that it was created for existing core games that never attracted casuals in the first place?

Because it is particularly attractive to casual crowd, I would expect to peak sales in the holiday season much closer to the Wii than other XBox product. I own a Wii and a PS3 and I have no interest in Kinect. However, it doesn't matter if its sales will or will not keep the momentum, Kinect is an undeniable  success.

I can think of 8.6 million reason why Kinect isn't a lot of problems...but then again…who's counting, since gaming is about artistry (like when bums and poor people say money isn't that important....)

MikeB obviously it is an absolute pleasure to have your neutral unbiased comments back on the forums but really you can leave now before you bait folk into getting banned with you nonsense disguised as fact. It is clear that regardless of your prejudices people have decided that they wanted to experience the controller free enviroment. Microsoft got it right and for all of your trumpet blowing about previous failures of the PS Eye the Kinect is not the Eye it is much more and definately more technologically advanced in both its hardware, its software and its implementation.

Large parts of Europe and almost the whole of Japan are pro Sony this not Kinect is the reason the sales are not as high as in the US. Despite this Kinect has had reasonable success in these territories and will continue.

Wishing Kinect will go away will not make it so. I would suggest the most likely scenario given how well Kinect has maintained it sales after the holiday season is that it will continue to grow.
