i have the game but didn't go on-line yet... but once you start the game he ask you to build your profile and to post it on-line (so that maybe count as a connection)... maybe they wasn't expecting 500K connections at once.

if they ship more copies than that is because they believe it will sell more than that... the problem is that maybe they didn't have the time to setup all the servers in time to handle the 500K connections...

They are fucking retarded to think that one of the most anticipated games is going to sell and be played online at less than 500000 prepared slots on day one. I don't think even the creator himself understands how popular GT really is or how much people play online these days.

I'm guessing they figured not that many people would bother with online play the first day of release, mostly playing through the single player GT mode.  Just helps show how big online play has become.
