this might help but i doubt it will pose a thread to sony and ninty
Its not about immediate success but helping build a market for the next xbox. As one who enjoys jrpgs from time to time & owns a 360 I get the chance to benefit from these attempts. Lost Odyssey looks pretty good. =)
For all who are saying that Microsoft should just quit from Japan, that's not how businesses work (at least long term oriented businesses like Microsoft). They need to establish their brand there as much as they can, so that they can do better during the next generation. They're doing better than with the Xbox, so that's a small victory already, and they're surely hoping to do better and better in the coming years.
Japan may be a hard market for Microsoft, but it's not one they'll drop any time soon.

You know what would happen if Microsoft stop trying in Japan. It would make Japanese developers less likely want to develop for the system. You have to think of it like this, if you are a developer in America, would you want your own country to have the ablitiy to play your game... And if the console you choose doesn't sell well in your country that you put your games on, then you will want to put your games on the console that is selling well in your country... Its an ego thing as well as it is a money thing. Don't make a damn if you got paid a lot of money for a game that no playing in your country...
Mistwalker and Capcom are examples of this why Microsoft needs to keep trying... Mistwalker, now making a game for the Wii. Capcom, made games for Xbox 360 but are also starting to port them over to the PS3... To even to a lesser exent, Tecmo did it. Ninja Gaiden came to the PS3, three years later mind you, but they did it....
