software can't directly break firmware/hardware. hence the name differences.
If software "breaks" the ps3. it was a flaw in the ps3's design of hardware.
What's likely the case in most of the issues is the software stresses the ps3 more than other games at certain parts and it overheats thus breaking the ps3. Which is a design issue in the ps3... which seems to be the case with the older ones... one of the issues is the crappy thermal paste they used which hardens over time.
