Forums - Sales - GameStop warns of Kinect, Move shortages

I love how the thread starter didn't post the original gamasutra version but the  altered mcv one, for obvious reasons

So here's the real article:

New motion control devices from Sony and Microsoft are flying off the shelves, says GameStop -- and the retailer says it's an environment that reminds it a lot of the Wii's game-changing launch.

GameStop president Tony Bartel says customers should expect supply constraints over the holiday, and that Kinect in particular is helping drive console growth for the Xbox 360. Last month, Xbox 360 was the only console platform to see year-on-year growth, and Bartel expects that trend to continue thanks to Kinect.

"We definitely do see a new customer coming into our stores," he told analysts on the company's
financial results call to investors. "And it is selling hardware as well."

Kinect's software attach rate thus far looks "very high" too, says Bartel. "Kinect Sports and Dance Central -- they're definitely the expanded-audience type games, and those are attaching extremely well."

The company says it's "excited" to see the environment around both platform-holders' motion controls heading into the holiday season. "Not only are we excited with Kinect and Move in very short supply, but we also like the fact that they are bringing in an expanded audience," adds Bartel.

The company's executive chairman, Dan DeMatteo, says customers are saying that Kinect has motivated them to bring their Xbox 360 "from the son's room down to the family room so they can use it as a family, which is a great indication of what's happened."

At the launch of Wii, Bartel recalls, once the holidays came around "we had
customers following the UPS truck to our stores. I think you're going to have the exact same thing with Move and Kinect... you're going to have customers following the UPS truck to our store

A bit diffrent oin tone isn't it ??Move seems like it's being thrown in there out of courtesy to sony . It's kinect, xbox360 , kinect as far as this article goes. The Novembe & December  NPDs are going to hit some people like dynamite !!

Move has surpassed my expectations that's for sure. So far I label Kinect a success, but I want to see how it legs out after the holidays. 500 Million on advertising and the technolgy itself requires TONS of kinects sold to break even.

You realize that in the two weeks kinect has launched xbox hw has been pretty much statistically tied to where it was last year right?

Ask me about being an elitist jerk

Time for hype

They've both been selling above expectation (MS and SCE expectations), but there is definitely more demand for Kinect, due in part to the marketing campaign that has successfully ingrained the product into general public awareness. Average consumers have heard about it, and many are interested in buying it.

It's virtually guaranteed that shipments will continue to sell out quickly throughout the holiday season.

I see no reason why Move will not continue to sell in line with the revised SCE projections although the only thing I imagine will continue to run in and out of stock are the standalone controllers. Personally, I've only seen them in stock once at any retail outlet since it debuted. Amazon keeps running out of them as well and as a result, vendors are charging ridiculous prices with just over $70 being the absolute cheapest.

That tells me SCE could probably be shipping a lot more controllers.

Sorry i'll wait for November (and December) NPD to make the comparison .   The only official statement that we have is from charttrack mentioning that the 360's weekly sales (that were already better than wii and ps3) doubled the week kinect launched. Oh and the German software top-10 was particularly encouraging too.

False. They confirmed that before the kinect bump at least the Wii was ahead of 360.

False. They confirmed that before the kinect bump at least the Wii was ahead of 360.

Sales of Xbox 360 in the UK doubled last week off the back of the launch of Kinect, Eurogamer has learnt.

The spike was confirmed this afternoon by sales monitor Chart-Track, a spokesperson stating that, while specific figures could not be revealed, it was "more than a fair reflection" to say the figure was double that of the previous week.

The boost is understood to have widened substantially the gap between Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, with Sony's biggest hope for a pre-Christmas surge coming next week with the release of the long-delayed Gran Turismo 5.

A senior publishing source added: "360 doubled last week and it was already selling a lot. Wii and PS3 have been beaten by 360 consistently over the past few months.

"Wii is still outselling PS3 – the numbers are going the wrong way for Nintendo year-on-year but it's certainly not a disaster
