Didn't they do something with a hologram Elvis with Celion Dion on American Idol a few years back. That hologram was pretty impressive.

It's just a Pepper's ghost. It's actually rather simple and effective technology. It's basically just a really thin film of metal sheet on a stage, and the "hologram" is projected onto it, usually making full use of mirrors in the process. It's a nice effect.
