Im still amazed iOS is able to compete and compete well with systems spread across dozens of phones and pretty much every network. The sheer amount of Android phones coming out that are quality combined with the networks and options and iOS is still hanging in there. The second the iPhone is available on the majority of carriers, yahtzee.
Android is cool, totally deserved. Symbian sucks hairy wetty ass, Please get destroyed faster.
The difference between Android 2.1 and 2.2 is not that big indeed. But 2.2 is faster and it has the Hotspot/Tethering feature builtin. I never want to miss that feature again.

Android still has its issues in those areas, such as carrier enforced apps (which also mean delays for updates) as well as very few phones that are just stock Android, most have the manufacturers' own skin on, which can be removed, but there are still issues that.
And of course the issues of fragmentation....
But the only real issue with Android at the moment is the marketplace, its quality really does need to improve
Symbian is also used on some Samsung mobiles.
I have no fucking idea about Smartphone OSes, but I always love to see Google winning marketshare. I embrace everything Google does. All hail the Google Overlord! :P

As long as its 2.1 or better, your good. I would note that you can root your phone to get the updates in unofficial areas as needed. The biggest and most important changes were made from 1.5 to 1.6, then from 1.6 to 2.1. 2.2 is great (my phone got the upgrade a few days back), but its not something earth-shattering that would give you an inferior product if you couldn't have it. The most important aspect, IMO, is to get a good phone...Regardless of the OS behind it. Anything around the 1ghz range like a Nexus One is going to run fast, and play most games. |
an 1ghz is a tad too expensive here in Brazil. the Galaxy S, for example, is in the 900 dollars range (but I suppose I wouldn't need to change my phone for quite some time if I spent that much lol). I'm not really interested in watching stuff (playing would be nice but that's not the defining feature), and I was actually tempted by the Flipout due to its very small size. however, the screen is 1/4 (or 1/2) the size of the other screens, so I believe it would be completely useless for most of the apps/games. here we have the Cliq XT too (it was renamed to Quench), but that one is stuck in 1.5 and the RAM is half of the Flipout with doubled screen size.
I obviously wouldn't mind a phone hampered by the hardware, but if 2.1 is good enough I'll think about the phones we have available now. (and apparently the Flipout's got a few of the 2.2 features too)
the words above were backed by NUCLEAR WEAPONS!
This will be tossed on its ear (again) when the iPhone moves to Verizon in the US.
I always expected Android to lead the way... they're going to compete on price point with $29 phones, a place where Apple just isn't interested in playing.

Android is not a phone it is a phone operating system. Two very different things.
