Forums - General - Large Hadron Collider (LHC) generates a 'mini-Big Bang'

This scientifically is of course amazing to a layman like myself but I must echo others herem, I certainly hope that the scientests are showing adequate restraint and are doing this safely. I want them to continue their work of course because its just so damn interesting to contemplate, even for those not within the field.

I too as a layman in these things am absolutely amazed at this feat. just thinking about the mathematical calculations and research needed to generate these conditions is mind boggling. i'm sure its 100% safe, and they've been doing it for i think a year now and nothing disasterious has happened yet, so imo these scientists know its safe.

Well 100% safe is probably not true, any number of things in any instance could go wrong. But yes I don't think it'll be the end of humanity like many doom and gloom naysayers said. But such scrutiny is very helpful to keep people on their toes even if it is baseless. Theres nothing wrong with making extra precautions, especially when dealing with such forward looking science.

Well they are really using this (and most of the LHC stuff) to confirm current theoretical physics rather than to find new theories.

Isn't that like saying you are throwing a match into a barrel of liquid to confirm your theory that the liquid isn't flamable?

Lots of scientific breakthroughs are found accidently by someone trying to confirm another hypothisis.

It's a bit more precise than that. It's kind of like working out the molecular structure of the liquid, doing the math to find out whether its flammable and then tossing a match in it.

And of course they could find something new, theres just no reason to believe that that something new is going to somehow destroy the human race.

Which again, has often led to disasterous results.

I point back to my earlier example of the Tychonic model.

The Tychonic model was mathmatically sound, it was as far as "proven" as anything could be without having direct proof.
