Forums - General - Is this sentance harsh enough?

I'd also make it a crime to mis-spell thread titles. Its sentence, not sentance.

I don't care about spelling errors in posts (especially if they're long and its one or two mistakes) but if you're going to make a thread at least take the time to double check there are no errors in it.

i didnt see anywhere that said this was premeditated.  yes he hates gay people.  but the incident stemmed from the victim first offering to buy him a drink and then asked him to play pool (perhaps percieving pool as ""pool" ;)").  The guy, allegedly upset that the victim believed he was also gay, attacked him.

What was he doing in a gay bar if his intention wasn't to beat up some gays?

i just had a look around for some actual information on the bar and found this description of it "It's an easy place to meet new people as the crowd is wonderfully mixed - men and women, gays and straights and in betweens all mingling happily together."  so it just sounds like a bar to me... assuming he even knew that it was frequented by homosexuals beforehand.

Aha... OK, that's good to know.

6 years is about right, maybe slightly long if anything.

In my opinion this is what the justice system should be:

- Murder = automatic death penalty, unless it is undisputably an accident in which case it could be anything from like 10-30 years.

- Rape = 20 years everyone in prison should find out you're a rapist (multiple rapes especially if violent = death penalty)

- Child molestation/sexual assault = at LEAST 20 years and EVERYONE in jail finds out you're a child molester so you can be butt raped and then murdered in prison

- Theft, depending on the amount, can be anywhere from 5-15 years plus you get your own personal property taken away doubling the amount you stole

- Assaults: A little mix up is no big deal but something like is described in the OP would maybe be 5 years and the other guy gets a free shot on you if he so chooses.

The problem with your thinking is that stricter punishments have never shown to be a deterrent to violent crime.

Having prisons that actually rehabilitate people and a stronger education system would go much further in reducing crime than any kind of medieval punishment system ever would.

Or check out my new webcomic: http://selfcentent.com/

The injustice here seems to be that a person who physically attacked someone and perminantly hurt them got less then people that burnt someones property. Thats all that happened in the other case wasn't it? If that is what happens then one is dispropotionately harsh compared to this.

it doesn't matter that the guy targeted a gay man.

What matters is that he premeditated a fight, went out and searched for someone to fight, chose an innocent person to fight, and caused them brain damage.

For that, he should have the book thrown at him. That kind of premeditation shows a complete lack of remorse or humanity... the target being gay is irrelevant.

But he attacked him precisely for being gay.

So? What if he attacked the guy because he was dressed emo? What he attacked him for wearing a Bears jersey and he's a Lions fan? What if he attacked him because he drove a Ford? What does that change? The guy went out looking for a fight and found one.

Yeah right!

Wtf are you doing in a bar if you can't take a single punch anyway? :P

I believe isome studys show that the certanty of a punishment is more important then it's harshness in keeping people from commiting the crime.

Honestly i'd even be willing to go back to medieval times type punishment: ie. cut the hand off of a thief, publicly hang murderers, cut the dick off of a rapist, etc.

I just hate criminals so much. They have shit lives so instead of doing something productive like working or volunteering they have to go ruin other people's lives.

And I don't fully agree rehabilitation works. I'm sure it does in some cases but I don't think a crazy ass serial killer or a drugged up murderer can be rehabilitated at all.
