Forums - Gaming - The 7 best new IPs this generation

People who like it haven't said the list is "unmatchable" or "superior to everything", as matter of fact. Yes, an opinion supported by facts is superior, but how can you claim people who think the list is good/bad are speaking factually?

Again, I'm not bothered by objection nor acceptance. I'm bothered by method. If people were coming in and saying the list is "unmatchable", "nothing could top it", I'd disagree and debate that too (as I have before). That's the same as calling it "worthless". Worthless implies, as matter of fact, indisputable - of little to no worth. The list is disputable in either direction.

Perhaps you can direct me to a specific post to your take. I'll happily debate it.

Simply saying you agree to the list IS saying that the opinion is superior to everything though by definition of the type of list. This is not a list of 7 good new IPs. It is the seven best. This means that is you simply say the list is perfect you are implicitly stating that all other lists are inferior. That is the nature of the beast here. There is no way around it. By definition "best" means superior so there can only be one such list that is viewed as accurate by any given person.

You say the list is disputable, but several people have listed very, very good objections that no one has even attempted to address. Let me put one in front of you right now. The best new IPs are inevitably the ones that influence the marketplace, and game development in general the most. As such Wii Sports should have a spot on all such lists. I have stated this twice personally, and seen others say about the same.

Wii Sports has, indisputably , changed the direction of the modern gaming world. So much so that even Sony and Microsoft have chosen follow Nintendo's lead and offer similar games at the launch of their own motion devices. Popularity is also indisputable as it is not only the best sold game this generation (through bundling) but also spawned a sequel that is also one of the best selling games of the generation. The failure of inclusion on the list automatically disqualifies it as being accurate by this point alone. Should you view the entire Wii * series as one franchise it becomes hard to argue it deserves the top spot, although I wouldn't state that as their are clear differences between some of the games.

I would not even include L4D in the top 20. A zombie shooting FPS in the top 7 best new IP's?

COD:WAW's zombie mode was better then L4D in terms of a zombie shooter IMO.

The rest of the list isn't bad.

That is overly dismissive of what Left 4 Dead actually offers though. It is not the shooting zombies aspect that is appealing. It is a game being based around 4 player co-op survival that is good. It does an interesting take on the zombie apocalypse while emphasizing the truth that you would have to work together to ever hope to survive. Still I wouldn't put it in the top 7, but it would easily make top 20 new franchises simply because there haven't been that many great franchises.

To suggest that shooting zombies holds no appeal is ridiculous. It's the main draw of the game. Do you think a four player apple picking survival game would sell as well?

Zombies are the flavor of the past few years. Read Dead Redemption, Yakuza, Call Of Duty they're all including 'zombie modes' as a result of the strong appeal of the modes to gamers, and the fact that they sell well.

Perhaps out of the top 20 was a bit of an exaggeration, I'd need to sit down and review all the top contenders, but after my time with L4D, I wasn't very impressed.

I agree with Gears and Assassins Creed. Mass Effect is an interesting universe/backstory but as a game it didn't do much for me. Uncharted.. I played it and I do not see the hype in that game. The others I haven't played.

For my money, I'd also say Little King's Story, Dead Rising, and Modern Warfare

Edit: oh, and how could I forget, the Wii Series, the most successful new IP this gen.

For me, it would be the following in no particular order:

- Phoenix Wright

- Uncharted

- No More Heroes

- Wii _____

- Bioshock

- The World Ends With You

- Scribblenauts

phoenix was a GBA game, these were remakes with an extra case ^^

I .... honestly can't say anything bad about the list, all these games are deserving.

Sure we could have some borderlands and some Wii ___ games (well that one should) but these 7 are pretty damn good.

I'm a gears fan though so i'd put it higher =)

I'd say you have to put Rock Band up there somewhere. And L4D ? Are you f* kidding me? I'd fill that gap with Portal if anything.

Wrong word, sorry. It happens to me sometimes. It requires a longer explanation than I am in the mood to give. Anyways, I meant to say the main reason one might include such a game in such a list. Appeal of shooting zombies is high, but that is not the soul of the game. What it offers as a game goes above and beyond and should be considered much higher than simply shooting zombies.

@CGI
Yes they did say this list was superior to all others. The term best is not ambiguous in the least. Best means superior to all others by  default. They have elevated these 7 games over all others unequivocally.

The lack of Demon's Souls, Valkyria Chronicles, and Heavy Rain = I totally disagree. If only they made it a top ten, and included those in the top seven, regardless of order, I'd be happier.

The articles title is "Top 7 New FRANCHISES this gen"

Heavy Rain and Demon's Souls aren't franchises yet so they couldn't be in there.

I agree Valkyria Chronicles should be there....I think he's completely ignored PSP exists.

Actually, the article title is "Top 7 New IPs" - huaxiong's suggestions are new IPs.

I disagree with mass effect..

Little King's Story isn't a franchise, I believe...
