Forums - General - 4 Chord Song - Axis Of Awesome

When I Come Around is F#-C#-D#-B which is a full step up from the guys' E-B-C#-A

Self Esteem is A-F-C-G, so they started playing in C, making it C-G-A-F which is two full steps down from the guys' E-B-C#-A, so you're right, this one is a little forced...

great video, reminds me of the pachelbel rant

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

- George Orwell, ‘1984’

You know you can do that with most any song when you just put them all in the same key.  As long as it doesn't have some crazy fast or slow beat and funky rhythms it's not that hard to do...

Yeah youre right with when I come arround, I was thinking of the main guitar riff which doesnt follow that patter, but the bass dpes now that I listen.

Some were forced though, like When I come arround and self steem, but its true, those 4 chords and played in that order are common in a lot of songs, not that its a bad thing, you can do a lot on top of those 4, its just a skeleton of the song.

Makes me think, those notes really appeal to our brain and we dont like some of those songs for other reasons like lyrics, an annoying melody or drum rithm on top of those 4 chords or what the artist that made the song represents.

Ever since the beginning of music we have constantly drifted further from consanance and used more dissonance.  But we still have that soft spot for a I IV V I progression in C major because it's so accesible and easy to listen to.
