Forums - Gaming Discussion - My afternoon with Kinect (impressions)

Huh. At first I wondered why this wasn't in the Microsoft forum . . . at first.

Haha well it does involve gaming as a whole, talking about the device, which will eventually work on PC (officially not hacking), and thats what I discussed with my impressions and following debate.

I've been reading a lot about lag in this post and I can tell you from my impressions with Kinect as well as the impressions of non- gamers, lag isn't an inssue at all with Kinect.  In fact in many cases the motion to jump or move side to side (like in the raft game) is actually very natural.  i watched literally dozens of people who clearly had never played with a console system before stand in front of Kinect and know exactly what to do both in game and in the menu.  We have to remember sometimes that what we do as hardcore gamers doesn't translate all that well to  people that don't really enjoy games as a hobby.

I don't think the OP is being overly critical I just think he is looking at it from the perspective of a gamer and not that of a person that just doesn't get what we do.  To them the whole idea of just interacting with something in front of them is fascinating.  I do think that the $150 price point is mass market and sales so far seem to reflect that, but will have to wait and see some official numbers.

I've found lag to be fairly consistent from game to game to game, you do the action and the game reacts a moment later, and it's for every game, it's different experiences for each game cause the lag will hurt one game more than the other, Reflex Ridge a game that requires reflexes and timed jumping lag will hurt more than Rally Ball, I brought Reflex Ridge up in the lag portion of my impressions for that specific purpose, its showing off a game that requires quicker timing and you can fuck up through no fault of your own, it will just jump after you physically jump which can lead to problems if you do whats natural which is jumping right before the obstacle.

I remember reading preview after preview that discussed the lag and how the hardware just has a 100ms lag because of how it works, that's going to be that consistent lag you see in every game, just about every review mentions lag in games, the only game this seems different from is Dance Central and you can clearly see the delayed reactions in free style, but again it's the type of game it is that helps them.

Does that mean it's bad that they're doing their own work arounds? No, hardware has limitations, working around those limitations is just good design, which is why Dance Central is getting good scores and good reactions from people and just about everything else not so much.

Again, there are no "workarounds" being used for Dance Central.  I already explained this.

Also, the 100ms lag, you do realize, is lower than Halo 3 and Killzone 2 standard controller input lag?

I quite frankly don't believe you on Halo 3 I'd like some documentation, I can post video after video showing kinects lag, I couldn't say the same about Halo 3, Killzone 2 on the other hand had input lag, everyone complained about it, it was really noticeable and interfered with gameplay and it had to be patched, that was software causing the lag, not the input device however.

He's right to a certain extent in that most 30FPS games have over 100ms latency. Digital Foundry did an article on it a while back:

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-lag-factor-article?page=3

Game Latency Measurement
Burnout Paradise

67ms

BioShock (frame-locked)

133ms

BioShock (unlocked)

as low as 67ms

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

67ms-84ms

Call of Duty: World at War

67ms-100ms

Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood

100ms

Forza Motorsport 2

67ms

Geometry Wars 2

67ms

Guitar Hero: Aerosmith

67ms

Grand Theft Auto IV

133ms-200ms

Halo 3

100ms-150ms

Left 4 Dead

100ms-133ms

LEGO Batman

133ms

Mirror's Edge

133ms

Street Fighter IV

67ms

Soul Calibur IV

67ms-84ms

Unreal Tournament 3

100ms-133ms

X-Men Origins: Wolverine

133ms

However, as you pointed out, in these games listed, no input lag is actually noticeable (with the possible exception of GTAIV), yet it is noticeable in the Kinect games as seen here:

http://www.eurogamer.net/videos/kinect-latency-tests

This would suggest either that MS' latency estimates are an absolute minimum that is rarely reached, or some other effect such as collective latency between camera, 360 and TV that add up to more than the 100ms for just the camera. Alternatively, maybe the lag is just that much more noticeable when using a camera based system.

Edit: found the article to go with the second vid:

Girls love this product and will translate into good sales. Everyone that is not a hardcore gamer seems to love it.

My girlfriend has not touched any other game since we brought it home.

Also I love how every ps3 only owner loves to comment on something they never tried.

I think it is awsome and has potential.

I also noticed that lazy people have a problem with reflex ridge  . Not jumping high enough or not working hard enough to miss or pass the object. So lag or are you just a fat ass.

there is lag but doesnt' stop me from passing the advanced stages of reflex ridge.

Maybe you just suck at the game. Cause I'M not having problems. when i jump I left up my legs high, not a sissy bunny hop either. I think a lot has to do with being lazy and not working hard to pass a object.

I think the lag will be updated and patched until it works damn near perfect.

Thanks for the documentation, interesting stuff there 100ms is I believe the latency the article said, it's not exactly something to quote me on since I'd need to find the article since I read about that nearly 8 months ago or more.

Hahahahah. What, you don't believe that the laws of time and space can be circumvented by software patches? Oh, wait...

I think technically this would require firmware patches but really I was commenting on the flaming and bringing up the PS3 for whatever reason.  Though its true if its all on the input device rather than the firmware running it (which they've had two years to work on) then patching isn't doing anything it requires a hardware revision.

That was my point. With Kinect we reportedly have a hardware lag of around 100-150ms plus however much the software introduces. Wii has a hardware lag of 50ms plus software lag, Move has 22ms plus software lag. You can improve the software side, but you can't "patch" the hardware.

Move is better until you introduce the camera in the mix, apparently working in tandem it creates slight lag, had someone give me some links when I brought it up in my Move impressions thread.  I think these developers of these products need to think about things like that, if the devices used causes lag, its going to be even worse when you throw software in the mix.

From launch game lineup lag is as follows Wii > Move (not bad at all just enough to notice) >> Kinect it can actually effect gameplay like I said with Kinect, something you don't really see with the other devices, and for any gamer being hindered by hardware is a frustration.
