When was DQ9 announced for the DS?

2006.  Same year Versus was announced actually (speaking of Vaporware...). :P

The difference between those two is that atleast we see something new of Versus XIII every year, while we don't even know what the DQX logo looks like.

Either way, Square-enix shouldn't announce there games when they don't even know when they are gonna be able to release them.

A lot of the people who where excited back then in 2006 about FFvsXIII probably don't even play games anymore.

What two?  I was talking about DQIX and Versus. :P

If that's true, my bad, but your post seemed to be suggesting that FFvsXIII was more vapourware than DQX.

I still think the game will be a 2012 release, but by that time 3DS will have a big userbase and the Wii will be close to dead, so I'm guessing they are now trying to figure out if it's a smart choice to keep the game a Wii exclusive, make it multiplat 3DS/Wii, or simply switch platforms.

Pandora's Tower will have an opening week of less than 37k in Japan. (Won!)
Pandora's Tower will sell less than 100k lifetime in Japan.
Stakes: 1 week of avatar control for each one.

I agree.  This will be Wii's last big Christmas.   And frankly no RPG has done well enough on Wii to really justify it having DQX.  I can't imagine it'll remain on Wii or at least remain as a Wii exclusive.   Most like be 3DS or Wii/3DS.   Slight chance of moving to PS3 but that would mean massive rewriting of code, a 3DS port would make more sense and the Japanese love their portables anyway.     I would expect sales on 3DS>>>>>>PS3>>>Wii

You completely underestimate the pull of Dragon Quest in Japan. Dragon Quest will make Japanese gamers come to the Wii, regardless of the performance of past RPGs there. They could put the game on the Original Xbox and have Japanese gamers turn the Earth inside out looking for used copies of that console

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

That may be true, but I don't think retailers will be thinking that way when it comes to the Wii.

Well it has been awhile.  Honestly, even I'm starting to question if DQX is still Wii bound.  Hopefully we hear something at Jump Fiesta in December, Wii's starting to run out of time...

I'm not underestimating anything.   Same could be said of Monster Hunter.  But that's still no excuse to not put your biggest title on the system that will give you the best returns.  It's no secret Japanese prefer portable consoles to home consoles and with the 3DS line-up it looks like it'll be more 'traditional' or 'core' than the Wii's audience so the potential is much greater there.

Retailers may be overly bullish on Wii games (especially 3rd party ones, witness the Basara 3 blunder), but this is still Dragon Quest.  I mean really, the franchise is third only to Mario and Pokemon in Japan, retail will embrace the game on any system with open arms.

Monster Hunter less so, because the ones with local multiplayer are the really compelling ones in Japan. The console game was big, but not in the same league as Dragon Quest

I'm not saying it will definitely stay on Wii, but i am saying that their decision to move it will in no way be predicated upon the Wii's appeal, because this is a definite killer app that overrides a console's appeal itself.

The question is how much of the game has actually been developed that they're just not telling us about. Is it at a point where it still could move to another platform or not?

I have to disagree to an extent.  The problem here is that by the time DQX comes out the Wii will, most likely, be on it's way out.  People who do not currently own a Wii would be relunctant to purchase a dying system for one game, even if it's DQ.   However, they'd love the excuse to get a 3DS, which would likely have other games they'd want in the future.  So sales would be stronger on 3DS than Wii.    I feel comfortable saying that because it's obvious there's not a large RPG crowd on Wii now.

One possibility that we havn't considered is they make DQX a Launch title for Wii2....
