The only properly reliable console manufacturer is and always has been Nintendo. Just let me give you an idea of the reliability (I've owned many consoles).
NES- No problems, no broken controllers
SNES - 1 Nintendo branded broken controller, 1 no name brand broken controller
N64 - 1 broken analog stick. However if you have ever played Mario Party 1 you would undstand why (My alalog stick actually grinded down to a dust and the dust clogged the base of the stick)
Gamecube - No problems, no broken controllers.
Genesis - No problems, no broken controlers (but I didn't play it much)
Dreamcast - No problems, no broken controllers (but I didn't play it much)
PS1 - original model console broke in 4 years. Ball bearing rotating disks became loose and flew out. Repair cost $90, new PSOne cost $130, PS2 was just released. Also 2 broken controllers.
PS2 - original model console broke in 4 years. Sony apparently had a substantial laser issue, and life expectance on original model PS2's was 2-3 years due to laser issues. Repaired for $50, broke again in 6 months, 360 was already released at this point (1 year or so my PS2 sat on the shelf, and I didn't fix it. Just played GCN). Also 2 broken controllers.
PS3 - no problems, 1 controller with a loose L2 trigger button
360 - 2 defective RROD original model consoles, replaced under warrenty. Currently on HDMI model, 1 controller with a loose X button.
Gameboys (Original, Pocket x 2 (sister had one and gave me it), Color, GBA, GBA SP, DS) No problems at all, not even a bad pixel.
Nintendo kills all in terms of reliability.
