Forums - Sales - My Q3 Sales Summary Special

Introduction

Hey guys, and thank you for reading (or glancing at) my Quarterly Sales Blog. This is my Quarter 3, 2010 end special.

I hope you enjoy this edition of my Sales Specials. This fall is going to be a very interesting “battle” between PS3 and 360. It seems every time one of these guys does something to push sales, the other counter-acts it. In 2008, MS made a significant price cut on their 360’s bringing the Arcade down to $200, the Pro to $300, and the Elite to $400. 80% of sales then were in the Pro Model according to Michael Patchner. Then in 2009, Sony made the PS3 Slim, that cut the 360 lead from 8.1 million to around 4 million, making PS3 the dominant system in EMEAA, and for the first time bringing the difference to below the initial difference when the PS3 was launched. Then this summer, MS made their own 360 Slim and prospered sales-wise, but now Sony has counter acted that with the Move. Soon Kinect will counter act that, and next year, who knows? A $200 PS3 price cut will help Sony, but will that be enough to counteract a 360 price cut to $200, and $130 or less on the arcade model? How well will Kinect and Move fair in 2011? Judging from console sales data Move has made a massive affect on sales data, so it will be an interesting fall.

As for the Wii, it’s popularity has dropped since last year, and it’s only selling on par with the PS3 and 360. Some weeks these consoles come within 35k of each other. Hopefully Nintendo does something else then simply make a Red NSMB bundled Wii, otherwise HD game consoles will just kill it off next year. I expect a price cut in 2011, and a successor in 2012.

Finally this is the last holiday the DS and PSP get to enjoy before their successors come in. That said I still expect DS to outsell everything else, and I am looking forward to Golden Sun DS, and God of War.

Note: For those reading this on VGChartz, I have done this type of analysis since January 2008 on GameTrailers, so don't be shocked if it's all confusing. Sales figures are VGChartz figures at the time of posting and will not be re-edited to account for any minor adjustments in sales in the future. Thankfully I posted this after that massive PS3 Move adjustment. However this update does not that into account the recent 20-30k weekly boost the DS, PSP, and PS2 have had and the 3k weekly reduction PS3 had (which I predicted and was critisized for). Some PC game data uses wikipedia as VGchartz seems lacking in old PC games data. I also note Polyphony data for Gran Turismo 5: Prologue since VGChartz doesn't account for the digital download copies, but I still use the VGChartz value because a lot of HD games are available for digital distribution which are untracked, and since these games are being compared, errors should be included for all games.

Older editions are here:

For those reading this on GameTrailers. I have also posted this on VGChartz as I have kind of switched forums. Please don’t hate me, I did not forget about you, and as long as you guys keep reading this stuff, I’ll keep posting it.

Another Note: Data updated to October 2nd, 2010

Enjoy!!

Interesting

-Madden NFL 11 has more pre-orders in the Americas for PS3 then the 360 version. This is unusually since the 360 outsells the PS3 1.75 to 1 in this region, and generally this is an American game. This is because of console specific DLC content on the PS3.

-Halo Reach pre-orders are slightly above Modern Warfare 2 pre-orders at the same time to launch. This suggests that Halo Reach will outsell Halo 3. So far this is true, but not by as much as I had anticipated due to a poor review score (damn 9 maps online! It needed more)

-Gran Turismo 5 has only about 108k Pre-orders, 18 weeks to launch. Do you think this game will still sell as well as Prior instalments? I don’t think so.

-Does anyone know a good website that will track digital distributional sales of various games? I would like to get "true" sales figures in the list (e.g. GT5P), also does anyone know a good website that tracks iPhone and other mobile device game sales? Want to make these summaries as complete as possible.

P.S. Sorry for the delay.

that is some serious compliation of data. I'll have to check through this later.

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy
In the past we played games. In the future we watch games. - Forest-Spirit
11/03/09 Desposit: Mod Bribery (RolStoppable)  vg$ 500.00

38 current-gen titles in the top 100.

I expected more poeple to reply to this, but of well. Essentially I just tabulate data, so I can follow how well games are doing after every quarter. Next quarter I will also subdivide the above 3 million games by genre.
