The difference is that LBP/Sackboy are not being advertised by sony as their mascot.  You can bet that if every sony display in every retail store started prominently displaying an anime cat then those fans would looks elsewhere.

They do use it a little, in Japan where it may actually be helpful.  In the west the amount of people you would attract by using a mascot like that is so small that they [sony] have evidently decided it is not worth the risk of having the other fans flee.  I agree with them.
