Who has the best 1st party devs this gen

SONY World Wide Studios 184 59.16%

Nintendo 117 37.62%

Microsoft 10 3.22%

Total:311

Nintendo, without question.  They're the only one seemingly able to support two platforms at all well simultaneously too (looking at the semi-pathetic lineups of SCE on PSP and MGS on PC in recent years).  Seriously, no other first party develops as much content as Nintendo, sells as many games as Nintendo or seems to have the industry wide influence and impact of Nintendo.  Nintendo also works directly with more outside developers on 1st party content than Sony and Microsoft combined, and also hold the distinction of being the only 1st party who lets their own teams make games for 3rd parties directly. They are truly unequaled, and haven't really been (imo) seen Sega's heyday.

And for the FULL list of 1st party Nintendo studios (and the bigger recent games they worked on)...

  • Nintendo EAD Dept 1 (Nintendogs, Mario Kart DS/Wii)
  • Nintendo EAD Dept 2 (Wii Sports/Resort, Animal Crossing WW/CF, Wii Play, Wii Music)
  • Nintendo EAD Dept 3 (Zelda series: Twilight Princess, Phantom Hourglass, Spirit Tracks)
  • Nintendo EAD Dept 4 (Big Brain Academy/Wii Degree, New Super Mario Bros/Wii, NPC Pikmin 1-2)
  • Nintendo EAD Dept 5 (Wii Fit/Plus)
  • Nintendo EAD Tokyo (Super Mario Galaxy 1-2, Flipnote Studio, NPC DK Jungle Beat)
  • Nintendo SPD Dept 1 (Rhythm Heaven, Tomodachi Collection, various Wario Wares, Metroid Other M)
  • Nintendo SPD Dept 2 (Tetris DS, Style Savvy)
  • Nintendo SDD (Brain-Age 1/2, Jam with the Band, English Training)
  • Nintendo NSD (Personal Trainer Walking/Cooking)
  • Nintendo Software Technology (Metroid Prime Hunters, Mario Vs DK 2/3)
  • Intelligent Systems (Fire Emblem RD/SD, Super Paper Mario, Advance Wars DS/DoR, DQ Wars, various Wario Wares)
  • HAL Laboratory (Kirby Canvas Curse/Squeak Squad/Superstar Ultra, Pokemon Ranger 1/2, 3D Picross)
  • Creatures Inc. (Project Hacker, PT Walking, Pokemon Ranger 3, PokePark Wii)
  • NdCube (Wii Party)
  • Retro Studios (Metroid Prime 3/Trilogy)

It seems like there's undue emphasis on the importance of first-party developers here.  Why should anyone care if Microsoft pays third-parties for more exclusives instead of owning the developer?

Well as Sony had to learn going from PS2 - PS3, that may not look well in the future. Having internal studios is always better than having to deal with IPs you don't own, even if you pay money. Just look at how many once exclusive titles have gone multiplat.

Secondly, I don't think Sony bought any new developers this generation(?)

nope they've bought a couple iirc, definitely Media Molecule (the LBP guys) as well as a smaller studio that was working on a game where you use recorded sounds to solve puzzles (not sure if they're going to make their own game or help with the games of others but they're definitely developers)

They bought Guerilla and Zipper in 2006, Evolution and bigBig in 2007, Media Molecule in 2010.  That's more than they bought in the PS2 era (just Naughty Dog and Bend iirc), and PS1 era (Psygnosis, which admittedly was HUGE).

Nintendo

Microsoft and then Nintendo.

themanwithnoname's law: As an America's sales or NPD thread grows longer, the probabilty of the comment "America = World" [sarcasticly] being made approaches 1.

Nintendo. When one publishing house pretty much single-handedly carries the burden of selling a console (and makes that the top-selling console through those singular efforts), you know they have to be doing something better, then if you look outside that and include handhelds, it only grows more unbalanced in their favor

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

sony theyve made many new and good games this gen, nintendo just keeps making the same games , and ms first party is almost nonexistant

I have to give this for Sony, even though I prefer MS games.
