Forums - Sales - PS2/360 Needs Adjustments?!

According to the latest reports http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?p=24102279#post24102279 the PS2 and 360 is only seperated by 1m during 2010, and it even "outsould" the 360 for the first half of 2010 (Jan-June). Yet we never see any of this on VGC. I think we need to add PS2 to the charts on the front page aswell tbh. It's selling at levels current gen consoles are.. so why not? It gives a great perspective on things.

The report on Neogaf shows:
PS2 Jan - June 3.3m
360 Jan - June 3.0m

VGC has it at (if im not facepalm'ing myself with misunderstood numbers)
PS2 Jan - June 1.5m
360 Jan - June 3.5m

Strange, no?

For the year so far the report claims
PS2 Jan - Sept 4.8m
360 Jan - Sept 5.8m

VGC has it at -||-
PS2 Jan - Sept 1.6m
360 Jan - Sept 6.4m (while MS reports claim 5.8m shipped throughout the same period)? http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=411501

Am i missing something? Or are the numbers just way off? Please do correct me if im wrong.

OMG if those are actually PS2 numbers.

The problem as was with the PS3 numbers are in the areas that VGCharts is having trouble in tracking. i.e Middle East, Africa, Eastern Europe, Latin America. I expect there to be some sort of adjustment for PS2 shortly to bring it in line but it seems that until there is a more reliable source of regular data for those particular markets, we'll have to rely on quarterly reports. Thats why I think it will be unlikely that the PS2 will be on the front page charts.

It just seems lame that it can't be there because of artificial gen limitations, when it does numbers comaprable.  If anything it would just be fun to compare.  I guess because of alot of them are in "lesser" regions, it's looked at differently.  Eh, either way....

...PS2 is freakin' GOD.

The PS2 won't be on the front page becuase it is a 6th generation console. The front page is currently hosting 7th generation consoles. Soon the 3DS will make its way onto the front page and we'll have to bump the DS off (maybe not right away). The data can still be seen if you go to the weekly/yearly sales pages.

Obviously there is no denyig that the PS2 shipped 4.8m over the last 3 quarters (here is the link to sony's website - http://www.scei.co.jp/corporate/data/bizdataps2_sale_e.html ) and your VGC numbers seem like you looked at the right data ranges. Most likely PS2 has sold a lot more in areas outside of the main trackers (So outside US, JPN, Europe). Over the last few years Sony has increased where they sell the PS2. These markets are obviously performing above VGC's expectations as seen with the PS3's recent adjustment.

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy

Yeah i understand your reasons for PS2 not being on the front page. I jumped the gun on that one.:(

How about the 5.8m shipped vs 6.2m-6.4m sold?

lol

360 adjusted down by half a million? If that happens kowenicki will have an article drought again..

cough

joking of course

hopefully sales get adjusted to more accurate ranges, I still think the PS3 is undertracked, believe it or not, since the difference is still well over 1.3 million between sony and vgc..

I suspect the real difference is around 800K-1M betwen sony and vgc.

Since nintendo DID NOT STUFF the channels, why would retailers allow sony to do so? Since history tells them otherwise?

Other than that..

I think it's possible WII may get adjusted down, along with the 360 *likely* and the ps3 may get adjusted up again imo.... especially in the Americas' were sony has nearly 20 million units shipped....

also the difference between sony's figures and vgc's figures ps2 has an over 11 million difference so.. obviously something is wrong with playstation tracking, and PSP is over 6 million in difference

Holy shit! Yeah, that's an issue that needs to be addressed. There is no way you can convince me that there are 11 million PS2s and 6 million PSPs out there in the wild.

I'm just quoting this to see if you could respond to Leo's points.  Does he have a case?

It is obvious that VGC has the PS2 numbers wrong over the last few years, but the PSP isn't 6m off.

Sony changed their reporting method and depending on how you count the numbers it is easy to double count systems. Sony also doesn't have correct public quarterly report prior to 2006. Using their website numbers you get

Calandar Year Sony Shipped (m) VGC (m)
2006 9.6* 9.39
2007 11.8 12.36
2008 15.5 13.88
2009 10.6 10.29
2010 4.1 4.39
Total 51.6* 50.31
Diff   1.29

*note that in 2006 I estimated 1.5m units for Q1 since the data is incomplete. 1.5m seems fair considering 2005 performance and CY 2007 Q1 shipments

To argue that the PSP is undertracked by 6m means that VGC is undertracking ~5m units in 2005 and 2004. In other words you are accusing VGC of missing 4m sales in EMEAA in 2005 alone!!! I can say this because in 2004 the PSP was only released in Japan, and in 2005 we have NPD and Famitsu to compare to. I would say at most that the PSP was undertracked by 1.3m over the last 5 years.

To top it off, SECJ just said that they shipped 62m PSPs through sep 2010, while VGC has that number at 60.4m which means most likely that the PSP is undertracked by ~0.6m.

EDIT: heh, I could have saved myself a lot of time by just typing the last paragraph first
