I say TT is also porting GTA IV to the Wii to sell more copies never hurts.

How about porting it to the PC first?

Well, if their in a bad enought situation maybe MS (or Sony) could bride them to make GTAIV exclusive with some timely upfront cash.

Makes you wonder how unfinished it was to be delayed though and how unpolished it may yet be when released.

Gee, you'd think with all the cash Manhunt 2 & Carnival Games is making them they'd be in the black already. jk.

An exclsuive for Sony would require an insane amont of upfront cash -- cash that Sony doesn't have.

For the sake of simplicity, let's assume GTA4 will sell 8 million copies in the US in 2008.  Probably 5.5 million to 6 million would for the 360 under such as circumstance and 2 to 2.5 million would be for the PS3 (assuming PS3 sales stay relatively high).  The US is definitely the primary market for GTA and GTA needs to make its money here.  For Take Two to do a PS3 exclusive release it would cost them hundreds and hundreds of millions in lost sales.  Although a 360 exclusive release might cost them about one hundred million in lost sales.

Oh heck I realize that.  Plus MS is in the habit of buying exclusives while Sony is not, but I wanted to give the Sony fans a least a little ray of hope.  Thanks for crushing it completely.

If they're in this kind of situation, I wonder how unprepared the game had to be for them to delay it. It must have been quite bad, or I imagine they would have just released it and planned to patch it later. It doesn't bode well for the game.

Maybe they should look at accepting some sort of up-front monetary compensation from Microsoft for exclusivity or further benefits. MS would likely help them out here if they help 360 sales in some way in the near future.

That is an interesting point ...

What would cause a company that is so close to going bankrupt to spend an additional $5 to $10 Million on a game, and potentially run out of money before it is released? Realistically speaking, it would have to be caused by a problem large enough that it seriously risked the sales of the game ...

I would personally suspect that the problem was that there wouldn't be enough completed, high-quality, content ready to release the game in October and it was delayed in the hopes that they could drastically increase the ammount of content in a short period of time; if this is the case there is still a reasonably high risk the game could be delayed further which would risk all of Take 2.

They will get purchased, not go bankrupt. If the earnings are really bad next quarter, the stock price will crash and become so cheap that they will become an attractive takeover target. Companies are basically playing a waiting game to see how cheap they can buy them for.

So the next question could be : Who ?

As a result, an incredible 32 percent of company stock is outstanding, meaning investors are anything but confident with Rockstar's sugar daddy at the moment.

32 percent?! Dear Lord, that's unbelievably bad. No one wants to own stock in this company, it seems. Can't blame anyone, since I certainly wouldn't waste my money on Take-Two!

Having worked (briefly) for Firaxis Games, which is a developer owned by Take-Two, I want to re-emphasize TheBigFatJ's comments. When we were working on Civilization 4 (published by Take-Two), we were given a firm release date by which the game absolutely HAD to be done in order to be on shelves in time for Christmas 2005. As it turned out, the game actually wasn't ready, but the publisher forced it out anyway, causing some serious compatibility problems with various graphics cards. To Firaxis' credit, they fixed things pretty fast with some patches, but the fact remains that Take-Two was very insistent on having our game release on schedule.

So in other words, from my own experience, I also surmise that something very wrong happened with the development of Grand Theft Auto 4. The game really can't be delayed again, so I suspect that the developers are working under extreme pressure right now. It makes you wonder how a company that receives so much praise from critics can turn out to be so poorly run. (I suspect that Take-Two's strategy of "make nothing but high-budget extravaganzas" is what's killing them, at the same time that it makes them gaming media darlings!)

My Website

End of 2008 totals: Wii 42m, 360 24m, PS3 18.5m (made Jan. 4, 2008)

Something REALLY bad had to have happened with GTA4 then.

Take-Two needs a red ribbon and a "for sale" sign at this point. They'd better stay alive before GTA4 saves them.

Too bad the "save the children!" crowd will tout this as a victory.

There is no such thing as a console war. This is the first step to game design.

Didn't Take 2 receive $50 million from Microsoft? I don't know the extent of their activities, but shouldn't that be a significant amount of money for them? It's a bit surprising that they're in such difficulties after receiving that money, I guess they really needed it!
