Huge Wikileaks release shows US 'ignored Iraq torture'

Some suspected insurgents held in Iraqi custody suffered abuse, according to the leaked records

Wikileaks has released almost 400,000 secret US military records, which suggest US commanders ignored evidence of torture by the Iraqi authorities.

The documents also suggest "hundreds" of civilians were killed at US military checkpoints after the invasion in 2003.

And the files show the US kept records of civilian deaths, despite previously denying it. The death toll was put at 109,000, of whom 66,081 were civilians.

The US criticised the largest leak of classified documents in its history.

Speaking to reporters in Washington earlier, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said she condemned "in the most clear terms the disclosure of any information by individuals and or organisations which puts the lives of United States and its partners' service members and civilians at risk".

But Mrs Clinton did not go into specifics on the disclosures.

'Nothing new'

The 391,831 US army Sigacts (Significant Actions) reports published by Wikileaks on Friday describe the apparent torture of Iraqi detainees by the Iraqi authorities, sometimes using electrocution, electric drills and in some cases even executing detainees, says the BBC's Adam Brookes, who has examined some of the files.

The US military knew of the abuses, the documents suggest, but reports were sent up the chain of command marked "no further investigation", our correspondent adds.

So, hardly suprising but what effect do you think this leak will have?

It will not have the effects the US thinks.

However, it will show more evidence of why is the most hated country in the world. Thy worked really hard to deserve it

So Iraqi authorties tortured people and America is supposed to care?

American soldiers killed many civilians and tortured prisoners, not just the Iraqi authorities. They are responsible for many crimes, but they are hush hush

I... just kinda assumed this was the case.

Afghanistan too.

I'm pretty sure this is the case with every country any "Western firstworld" country puts their armies in.

Heck, you don't think the UK knew this was going on either?   Just because you help out the side you think is "less evil" it doesn't mean said side is going to have Western first world morales, especially considering all the torture and deathsquads they just had to go through.

Takes more then the sudden ability of voting to make a country have western ideals.

It's ultimatly why these "nation building" efforts are almost never worth it.

Well the USA usually polls in the top five.

Most hated though is just a silly comment when you've got countries who contribute basically zero good and only negative things to the world community.

The USA does a lot of shady stuff... any "power" country does, lots of Europeon countries do too, it's just not mentioned as much because they aren't as poweful at the moment.  I'm not sure i'd call this one of them.

You aren't going to be able to effect countries outside of your own without such things.  If you want to nationbuild and get out a murderous dictator, you can't be surprised that the people themselves are going to be a bit bloodthirsty and brutal since, you know they've had to live so long under similar circumstances.  What could the US do realistically?  Threaten to take their ball away and go home leaving the country worse off then it was when there is a chance for democratic stability and hopefully work towards western ideals?

It's why nationbuilding is rarely worth it though.  Even the guys you put in power aren't going to see eye to eye with you... and there is no gurantee they will end up with the same ideals in the end.

I like the US, but the fact that is some many shady stuff I acknowledge that.

Hilary Clinton and Kathleen Sebelius apologized for what happened in Guatemala in the 1940's. when the US did the barbaric and deliberate act of inoculating prisoners, soldiers and mental patients with the killer disease syphilis without their knowledge or permission.

all countries are out for themselves or want to keep power, funny that

but politics aside i just find it funny that people poll the most hated country, are their people standing on street corners around the world asking which country you hate the most or do the representatives in the united nations vote every month
