If there's one thing we can draw from the Wii model, if the games are fun enough and encourage multiple controllers a lot more people than you'd think will slowly invest. While the total figure can seem huge, when you're buying a single wand at a time over a number of months it just doesn't seem like much. I believe this is why Sony are clearly positioning Move more as a traditional peripheral controller, because in a sense it is and, should it take off well enough, this model typically drives a lot of additional (very profitable) hardware sales. With Move Sony I believe are targeting hardware sales, in addition of course to more consoles, software and PSN users. MS are pushing Kinect more as a console launch, which in a sense it is as you would only reasonably buy one and that's it. After that the upside for MS is install base, consoles sales, software sales and hopefully more Live subscriptions. However unlike Move, at this point Kinect doesn't seem well positioned to drive addition hardware peripheral sales (and unless MS subtly change the message right now the whole 'you are the controller' make Kinect the end result, no more peripherals required - unless you really want that inflatable boat!) With the higher entry price (even if arguably lower multiple player price) it also seems more sensible to position Kinect this way. Anyway, like I said I think that, at least over the first three months, Kinect will see the larger install base, but Move might well see the higher individual unit sales. |
That's essentially what MS did when the inevitable "Move vs. Kinect" comparos came up.
They pulled a Sony and did a break down of how/why the 360 w/ Kinect is cheaper than not only the PS3/Move, but also the Wii/a-whole-bunch-of-extra-controllers.
Of course if Kinect is limited to 2 active players, then technically price comparisons stop at two sets of controllers, regardless of platform.
There are several ways of looking at the sales over the initial release period. I think most will agree that Kinect will or at least should have a higher install base, but revenue-wise, they may end up being pretty close to even if the typical Move user only buys a starter pack and an extra wand.
Game sales should be a better reflection of installed user base, only I say there's reason to believe that most, if not all of the Move titles that sell big numbers will be dual control scheme (ie KZ3, SOCOM, LBP2). That makes it harder to track. Of course if PS3 owners are buying a ton of controllers and Move required mini-game collections/party games/budget games are only selling nominally, either they're using them for Move compatible/dual control scheme games, or they're just buying a bunch of controllers for the sake of collecting.
kinect adventures (bundled with kinect) had 3.000 preorders more this week in america, so i think that kinect will bomb.. that plus bad reviews and no interesting software at all..

Woudn't that be because MS told retailers to stop taking pre-orders(Kinect first shipment sold out)? Or was that just in UK(can't remember).
I don't think so, now that Best Buy and Amazon.com are all out of Kinect Sensors and all:

Well, it is 10 days before Kinect comes out and Amazon, Best Buy and Target are all sold out of Kinect already. Amazon resellers are selling Kinect for $300 already (a markup of 100%). Also, Gamestop is about to sell out very soon as well from what I hear, with many individual stores already sold out.
So, is there any question now about which will sell better, Move or Kinect? Kinect is going to outsell Move mercilessly.

How many Kinects did each retailer have to sell?
123kinect.com has nothing less than ZUNE currently dominating its home page. If this isn't trying to attract bad luck at any cost...
