Forums - General - Is Blu Ray Starting to Dominate for Some Movie Genres?

That is to say the movies where visuals/visual effects are a big part of the experience.

Just went to buy 'How to train Your Dragon' for my kids and the store I went to had no copies available on Blu ray, but tons of copies in store on DVD. Their other store in town had one copy left on Blu-ray. So basically almost all Blu ray copies sold out within 24 hrs of release. This means:

1) High Blu ray demand ; or

2) This particular retailer screwed up and significantly under-ordered the Blu ray version but DVD still sold more in total (but with lots of DVD still on shelf it means significant over-order of the DVD version); or

3) Blu ray demand is highly front loaded, whereas DVD demand will have better legs.

Whatever the case it would seem the retailer under-ordered this movie for Blu ray.

I'm guessing that, because of the price difference, movies that are not so much of a visual spectacle will tend to sell better on DVD for a long time to come. But, despite the price difference, the visually spectacular movies will progressively sell better and by wider margins on Blu ray.

animes also sometimes sells better on blurays

Prices will come down as well.  Replication costs will continue to go down as more BDs are printed.  Sub $100 players this holiday season will be big sellers as well.

blu ray is old, i buy 3d blu rays only

Yep our replication costs at Sony has decreased significantly. At least in Australia.

Blu-rays are basicly a must have to watch movies now

Realistically, I suspect most genres still sell far more on DVD than Blu-Ray; but certain genres represent a larger marketshare on Blu-Ray than they represent on DVD.

blu ray is where its at

I currently want gladiator and braveheart but the fukin movies run up to $35 !! too much right now

any other suggestions?? I want to build up my library

Is that $35 Aussie dollars?!  It doesn't even cost that here (in NZ), and BR prices seem to be dropping quite quickly with more and more films on sale at the $15-25 mark (so about $12-20 USD), though new releases are still usually $30-40(but comparable with the DVD special editions).

Depends what type of films you like but I'd say Dark Knight, Black Hawk Down, Planet Earth, Casino Royale, Transformers.  All have reference quality audio, picture, or both.

Theres more DVDs in stock cause they sell more. I dont think BR will be in the realm of competing with DVD's for another 3-4 years. The digital age is coming fast in the major countries, so the heyday of bluray may never include beating DVD sales.

Getting an XBOX One for me is like being in a bad relationship but staying together because we have kids. XBone we have 20000+ achievement points, 2+ years of XBL Gold and 20000+ MS points. I think its best we stay together if only for the MS points.

Nintendo Treehouse is what happens when a publisher is confident and proud of its games and doesn't need to show CGI lies for five minutes.
