Forums - Gaming - Console FPS tactics, what is cheap?

There is a thread in the MS forum about how it takes more skill to play Halo 3's multi-player vs. Halo Reach. Many of the comments there got me to thinking about this topic. Now I understand that there seems to be a general disdain towards MW2 and even though I like the game, I understand why many people don't. What I'm wondering about though is not about boosters, hackers and straight up cheaters. I'm wondering about actual game play tactics.

Why is it that tactics that work are considered no good? If I can't figure out a way to counter something then that's on me not the other guy. Oh someone is camping around that corner, I know that cause he just killed me. What do I do? Do I just run around there all raged up just to get smoked again? If so then that's my bad. What's that, this dude just out BR'd me 3 times in a row? Well I'm gonna try to stay away from a BR battle with him, lol. I know I try to pay attention to who's killing me and what they are doing and when I come face to face with that guy again, I try not to do the same thing. Doesn't always work out but I can't be mad at someone else doing something to get the better of me.

Halo Reach is a new game so I'm not gonna get into that, the game play tactics will change over time. I will say that I think the Armor Abilities make it pretty interesting and I've seen some sick tactics at play. Are there gonna be things that people do that I won't do or that I don't really like, sure. But those types of things only keep me more mindful overall and IMO make me better at that game.

I don't have a diverse amount of online FPS experience. It's been mostly Halo, MW2 and a little L4D. I prefer FFA games so you don't have to flame for being a noob of whatever, I know what I am. I'm just trying to get some feedback on how people feel about tactics, maybe I can even learn something. I expect the normal "OMG MW2/Halo sucks ballzzzzzzz full of cheaters and little noob homos" comments but think of the questions.

What do you consider cheap? Why? Have you considered any ways to counter?

I LOVE paying for Xbox Live! I also love that my love for it pisses off so many people.

ok this is right up my alley, as a hardcore fps fan, this generation has taken cheap gameplay and made it standard.

cheap game play tactics are tactics that give a unfair advantage to a player. now to me I can only name 2 TACTICS  as cheap, and that's camping and spamming.

camping gives and unfair advantage of readiness to the camping player over others and that's cheap.

spamming takes an powerful object within the game and overuse it, this varies based on games. it's cheap, rockets in halo.....everything mw2,

Camping and using in game exploits like One man army/danger close with noob tubes. I don't think the game designers had unlimited noob tubes in mind when they thought up one man army.

Nothing is cheap, you can do the exact same thing but if it trivializes the gameplay it's a bad game in the first place.  Just don't play it.

I appreciate the post. To the bolded part, one could say that the camper has the disadvantage of his position being known. IMO, an unfair advantage would be one that couldn't be countered. Would it be wise of a camper to just continually run around the map, running and gunning in the open?

As far as the rockets in Halo, they are there for the taking. If you get them and use them on me first, god bless.

I'm also not trying to be a prick with any of this either. I personally try to use the flow of the game and the other player's tactics dictate more of what I do. I'm not really against anyone using any tactics so long as they are tactics available to everyone who plays the game, IF they choose to employ them. I know I get pissed sometimes with what other player's are doing BUT again, I try to look at myself too, what did I do to make it so easy for them.

i know, and in reality i could a whole page about this, fps tactics are my specialty. so I just generalized as best as I could, but it all depends,

the initial camp is the one with the unfair advantage to the camper.

after that it all depends, I've personally ran into some really talented campers who could survive a while, but that's rare.

Well what the hell dude, unload! That's what I wanna hear. I like the idea of people talking about this shit especially a specialist, lol.

To your point about an initial camper, in my experience both as a camper and someone who loves dislodging campers from their campsites, there are definitely a few choice spots on most maps for camping. These are the places I pay a lot  of attention to as I near them.

The only tactic the really pisses me off is spawn point camping,  someone sitting in view of a spawn point and just constantly firing on that position.   I some cases its a game design flaw,  but people still take advantage of it.  Camping in general only pisses me off if its a standard TDM game,  Snipers are excluded from this as running around with a bolt action rifle isnt the best of ideas.   But if its a game mode like Objective in Medal of Honor or Search and Destroy in  Call of Duty,  where they have to protect something.   Camping is a strategy that has to be used.

I'm glad you brought up snipers camping. I can't ever remember hearing someone say anything negative about a sniper. I mean isn't a sniper just a long ranged camper? I know that sniper rifles generally take more skill to score headshots but still. Couldn't one argue that it isn't too hard scoping in across a map on an unsuspecting noob? Not saying that I feel this way, just saying.
Oh yeah and you make a good point about the spawn camping.

Sure they are a long range camper, but they are very limited in what they can do.  For starters The view through a scope is narrow so you have limited view and targets can be in and out of your scope in less than a second.  Plus in most games the crosshairs are moving a considerable amount and you only have a short period of time where you can steady a shot. Also most of your targets are going to be on the move,  and from a distance if you dont lead them just right its a miss.  Plus if it wasnt a solid hit/kill shot, like the arm or something,  a follow up shot is difficult due to time to reload, the recoil from the gun or the guy can just move out of your view.

That is kinda why I give snipers a free pass,  its not like its a guy with an M249 SAW sitting just around a corner, behind a chest high concrete wall, with a 100 bullet clip waiting for anyone to go past.
