Sony spends most of their budget making games and not marketing them. Microsoft spends most of their budget marketing instead of making games.

Both turn out to be proftiable methods in the end because microsoft can get the word out more and expect massive sales for one title but sony just has more games for people to buy. What do you guys think of this? Which method do you prefer more?

I'm going to guess that the reason is that Sony has tightened its belt with the Playstation brand.  I think that's why 3DS is getting such an advantage with its launch date over the PSP2 and why they launched Move the way they did.

In my experience, most of the highly publicized and marketed games this gen, like Killzone 2, Gears 2,and GTA4, that haven't lived up to their hype. It's the lesser known and moderately advertised games that I've had more fun with (Uncharted 1, EDF 2017)

Both Sony and MS spend a lot on advertising as a whole.  The ratio for a given product or division just shifts according to priority.

For example for a while Sony have clearly spent plenty on TVs and 3D TVs.

Sure, $500 million or so for Kinect seems excessive - hell I'd argue it is excessive - but it's not like Sony doesn't spend plenty when it feels it suits the company to push something.

Heck, if we made most large, global companies divert half their spending budgets into public finances for the next three years or so we could probably sort out the global recession and various  budget deficits in no time.

Basically, most big companies spend plenty on advertising.  Although I wish they wouldn't.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

one is the biggest electronic company in the world and the other is the biggest software company in the world

SONY has sold 300 million home consoles more than 50% of the total number of home consoles sold

MS is the newest player in the Console gaming Scene with around 60 million total home consoles sold

Sony has an large collection of First party devolopers plus an array of 3rd party deals since PS1 and PS2 like Nintendo

MS is still building its First party and 3rd party deals up

MS is spending 500 million on kinect marketing launch

That is probably SCE entire Marketing budget could be even less.

Well you're looking at the past Bro, I owned a PS2 which now is in the closet with old junk.. Nice system back then.. but this is only MS's second console ever and they are killing PS3 in best selling titles.. beating them in overal games sold ( even the crappy ones ) .. Sony fans who are so harcore about Sony need to realise the PS2 thunder is gone.. Sony needs to regroup and hope thier next Gen Console is something to celebrate about, because Next gen will be even tougher.. Nintendo has gotten back alot of fans this Gen.. MS has more then doubled their worldwide marketshare over their 1st console XB1 ... And lastly Sony really hasnt done financially WELL the last few yrs.. Just looking at the PS3 division alone it was in the hole...The RED.. only in the last 6 months has it been positive and it wasn't that rosey...

Clearly you missed the part in yesterday's thread where it was noted that Sony Corp has a marketing budget of 5 billion, roughly 4 to 5 times Microsofts.

I understand that people prefer one company to another, that isn't a big deal, but not EVERYTHING Microsoft does is wrong...or inferior to Sony.

Well, I saw that yesterday, and really thought how much it can be manipulated.  Sony Corp is not the gaming division, it is the whole entire company.  I'd like to see the numbers that compare Sony gaming division marketing versus Microsoft gaming division marketing.

Well, just thought I'd point out, but for the last several weeks, despite having 5 million less consoles out there, Sony has been beating the total amount of Xbox software sold.

Not Real for example, with Forza Xbox 360 already has two titles and it's coming a new one in 2011. PS3 hasn't see GT5 yet.

You know that the PS2 was ''only'' Sony's second system aswell?....
