Forums - Microsoft - Kinect : $500 million in marketing, Will be bigger than Jesus!

libellule said:

oh, they have plenty money
but even when you have plenty of money, you want to spend it as good as possible
so you FOCUS

Since last E3 (I mean the 2009 one) exclusivity hype or marketing has been pretty low outside HaloR

Indeed, I forgot that SCconviction didnt receive a good marketing campaign either ... all people were already turned to HaloR and Natal

Focus on what exactly? Having the most 1st party games? That only seems to be important to Sony fans and apparently 3rd party exclusives aren't worth much.

Alan Wake was really the only game they didn't do much advertising for. Every other major exclusive on the 360 had TV ads. Including Conviction.

If this is true i'm officially selling my 360, what a complete rip-off. For the same money they could sell the first 10 million(!!) Kintect bundles for $99. If Microsoft is really this stupid, i don't want anything to do with it.

I'm sorry but that's truely an idiotic argument.  Every game and every product has a marketing budget.  As stated in this thread Sony's overall marketing budget is over 5 billion a year, with that money they could give away 16 million PS3s a year!   Are you giving back your PS3 too since you had to pay for it when Sony clearly has the cash to give you a free one?

That budget is for all of Sony's products. And Sony sold the PS3 at a loss for many years, so that's not a good comparison.

Personally i'm what they call an early adaptor, i usually buy these kind of things day one. Now Microsoft is going to rip-off their loyal customers who buy these things first by letting them pay a premium price so they can finance their marketing budget, and we all now how good that marketing turned out for their Zune mediaplayer and Kin phone(disscontinued after 6 weeks!).

Alot of people have been saying Kinect is overpriced and this proves it.

You're missing the point.  You said they should take the marketing budget and use that lower the price of the actual units, in fact you called them really stupid for not doing so.  That's not only ridiculous but you can basically say that about every product sold in the world.  There is always marketing money.

I also fail to see how this marketing budget proves the product is overpriced.   Where is the correlation?

Who really needs a PC when you own an XBox 360?

LOL, come on.

I m playing 2 games right now and I cant play them on 360 : Medieval Total War2 and Starcraft2 ....

Two real-time strategy games at once? Thats hardcore. Your PC rig must be insane.

GOTY Contestants this year: Dead Space 2, Dark Souls, Tales of Graces f. Everything else can suck it.

Do people realize that this campaign isnt just this year.

From the article I posted earlier.

"The Xbox 360 team created a multiyear, integrated campaign showcasing real people at the heart of the experience," said Mike Delman, corporate vice president of IEB global marketing, Microsoft. "Kinect puts consumers at the center of their entertainment, and our marketing efforts follow that same charter."

Its libraries that sell systems not a single game.

I remeber not too long ago i made a thread about kinect and giving my prediction of the marketing campaign of being at least $250,000,000. People thought I was crazy and it would be impossible of going that high but guess what now its 500,000,000.

Incoming complaint -> They only succeeded because they heaps of advertisng. Will probably be seen Nov 2010.

I see this happening as well. Damn, this thread went to shit in the 5 hours I was not here...

Here is a question Squil... If Kinect is a massive success, and sells a boatload, eclipsing the Wii...Will Sony execs be kicking themselves and saying "Damn it, we copied the wrong shovelware filled peripheral?"

I hope my posts didn't imply that I don't think move is a piece of shit as well. Motion gaming as a whole is a terrible thing.

The way I see it is that the day Sony and Microsoft got in to gaming and started their pissing match, I knew it would come down to this. When a company like Sega, who's been making games for 40 years gets booted out of the hardware industry due to the fact that it can't take as big of a loss on selling hardware as the other companies...the party is over. Its all about bottom line...

When you have 2 corporate giants like this who really are only in to gaming cause they saw a potential to make huge profits, and are trying to maximize revenue, they will not look to please the core gamers as that gets hard. Its easier to wow the non gaming crowd and take their dollars.

Of course, it took nintendo to give them an idea as coorporate giants are usually low on those...but once they have an idea, they can spend their stockpiles of cash on marektting it and make it more accurate and cool.

Now with all that core gaming pride talk aside....from a business perspective, its hard to deny the billiance of Kinect. Its much more marketable than Wii or PS Move.  MS isn't stupid and they know the idea of this tech will sell it...not the execution. So they want to make sure everyone knows its coming out...hence the large marketting budget.

Yeah I agree, it makes solid business success and they'll undoubtedly see great profits and sales with it. But as a consumer its hard  to watch them close down Ensemble and castrate Rare and then turn around and spend half a billion on Kinect.

You do realize they will have to sell like 30 million Kinects making $50 on every one to make a profit on it, right?

Money can't buy happiness. Just video games, which make me happy.

Sure, just pile it on top of the other billions of Dollars MS lost on 360 and its predecessor. XD

LOL, good luck to them on that. Especially when the hype of this thing starts to wear off after December's over. It's not going to last long.

Keep telling  yourself that, and Ill just keep watching MS destroy companies like ensemble and pump a half a million into a shovelware filled peripheral.

Very impressive, with every post you become an even bigger troll.

They didn't pump half a million into, "a shovelware filled peripheral." That pumped half a BILLION. The Kinect is gonna sell a shit ton of units. On top of that, it'll boost console and software sales. I'm sure MS has plenty to spend on games as well.

I'm confused about the Ensemble Situation. Perhaps MS felt they didn't need a studio that was pretty much dedicated to creating RTS games. However, Robot Entertainment which is former employees of Ensemble are working on Age of Empires Online. Perhaps they also wanted to leave so they can do whatever projects they desired.

I think it had to do with Microsoft wanting to focus on Xbox instead of games for windows, which clearly was in disagreement with Ensemble's speciality.

There was probably more to it than we know of course, but it sucks anyway, Robot entertainment has some of the former guys from Ensemble, but others also formed a couple other studios, and they lost their precious IP, so it's not like they're just not under Microsoft anymore.
