They would be fairly alright as third party developers and it would ne interesting to see, but they shouldn't unless we got new console producers. Honestly I'm surprised companies like Apple, AMD and Nvidia haven't manifested interest on producing a gaming console or the likes of one.

Apple has had gaming consoles before. They have a solid gaming platform now. AMD and Nvidia get more money from selling their chips to everyone else though. If either had their own console no one would dream of using them anymore.

Honestly, after the RSX and the Xbox's GPU and considering the current nature of their Fermi chips I don't think Nvidia will get another chance at the gaming market. Developing a console and all it's components, even if it doesn't sell much more than, say, the XB or the N64, could prove to be extremely valuable feedback on their plans of doing CPUs and who knows what else.

Yes, one could argue Apple already have their own platform, but they lack a direct competitor to PSWii360. Even if it is a sort of media center/console hybrid updated every year, they should have something out in the market.

Not only would they be sacrificing profits from hardware itself, not only would they be giving up the royalties that they get from third partiesp ublishing on their hardware, they would also be paying royalties to whatever hardware manufacturers they published their titles on. The fact that they would need to pay royalties on every single one of their 20 Million sellers in the console and handheld space makes this whole discussion absurd.

If any other company could move as many 10 million games as Nintendo does on a single system, they would be justified in making their own hardware if only so they wouldn't need to pay royalties to other companies.

Paying the royalties would hurt, but that could be off set by increased over-all sales. And if any company could force a console maker to reduce, if not flat out ignore them it would be the owner of Mario, or Pokemon. Both in one gives amazing leverage. Of course the level of sales needed would border on absurd, but their series have delivered that in spades this generation. Still I can't counter much of what you say because really I don't think it would work out as well as their current set-up.

@Haxxily
Look up the Apple Pippin I believe it was called. They tried dedicated consoles before. It didn't really work out well in the end.

Nintendo software sales are reliant on what they bring to the console. Each Nintendo machine usually brings something new to the table. This new element is usually a product of necessity for their games. If Nintendo was 3rd party then their games would be wearing a straight jacket in regards to design.

Their games would likely do worse on other consoles because of this. So they should stay in the hardware biz or just get out.

Squilliam: On Vgcharts its a commonly accepted practice to twist the bounds of plausibility in order to support your argument or agenda so I think its pretty cool that this gives me the precedent to say whatever I damn well please.

so now it is up to 22 yes.

And not one has the balls to say why they voted yes.

@cobretti  they dont want to have to buy a Ninty console and want to play the ninty games on their HDs just like what happened to Sega, i cant think of any other logical reason

yer but if that were to happen Nintendo games would not be Nintendo games as they build their hardware around games. Not games for a spec of hardware.

Can you imagine a mario game using crytek engine? or the unreal engine?

@cobretti  yeah right, but I would like to see a Mario game run on one of those engines just for the hell of it. It will be different thats for sure, but probably not Mario like

Yes but the question was would NINTENDO be better off, and not "would gamers like to see Nintendo games on HD systems"...
