Mistakes happen. No innocent man (or woman) should die because of death sentence.
Also, how do you teach people not to kill by killing? An old argument I guess. But still, what gives us the right to decide between one's life and death?
If it can be proven 100% that the person in question was responsible for the crime, then I would not be against the death penalty for a murderer.
japan has capital punishment and low crime rates.

Im against it.
- I have a huge problem with letting the State start saying when we can take other peoples lives.
- We try to teach people that its wrong to kill and we kill to punish those who break that rule, which I find a puzzling hipocrisy.
- Mistakes happen.
- Im religious (catholic), so I believe life is sacred and even if that person killed we do not have the right to take its life.
- I could accept in situations of absolute calamity, war, etc. When we have people who have commited murder and we are convinced that, if given the chance, would do it again and we cant keep them imprisoned or we cant protect those he'd try to harm. That situation would be a maybe. But nowadays, for that situation to happen is highly unlikely.

The death penalty does not reduce crime rates. People who are insane and on drugs do not care. The level of a civilised nations is where it does not have a death penalty: is democratic and respects human rights.
Death penalty is based on draconian religious principle of an eye for an eye. Cold blooded revenge. More blood shed usually results in more blood shed.

China has one party government. We all know what China is like on human rights. Democratic China. lol. One party government. Censored media, no free speech and political activism can end you in big trouble.
China just like Japan and most Asian nations also have capital punishment. Life is not valued in Asia and well there stance on human rights and democracy is questionable. Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia and Vietnam, etc are all militaristic governments with strict laws that are draconian compared to the western liberal democracies.
If you commit crimes in Asia or the punishment will be severe. You may get away with more in Europe and America than you can in an Asian or Islamic nation. Asia and Islamic nations are less tolerant than liberal democracies in the western world.

and do you have a point? the only thing about japan that you have said is that its also in asia(implying by its location its an undemocratic, draconian, cess pit), which is a pretty disgusting thing to say.

There are people who deserve to die, certainly, but I don't really trust a government not to fuck that up, and it's my understanding that it's more expensive to execute someone than it is to imprison them for life - which sounds so stupid and counterintuitive that it must be true |
This is almost definitely not true.
The average cost for someone to be imprisoned in California - as I recall - is about 50,000 USD a year; as in you could send them to UC Berkley with room, board, books, and everything, and spend a lot less money.
Extrapolate that shit to fifty years.

Both of these things are true but this correlation is not causatory, and painting it as such is dishonest.
