Forums - Gaming - Recommend me a 21-29" TV

*Topic should be -- Recommend me a 21-29" TV for gaming

I'm considering replacing my TV in my home office.  I have a shitty old TV that has been dying for a while now.  I'm going to be sitting fairly close (3-5 feet) to the TV so I don't really need a large one.  I also really don't give a crap about 3D.  I use to play only my older systems down there but if I got a nicer TV I could bring my 360 or PS3 down there and play games on them while The Wife watches TV upstairs.  I don't even really have a budget at the moment, I'm just see what I would want first.  Obviously, cheaper is better.

So basic requirements:

  • 21-29 inches
  • Sit 3-5 feet away
  • No 3D
  • No idea if I want LCD or plasma
  • No idea if I need 720p or 1080p
  • Going to be playing everything from NES to 360 to maybe even PC on it.  My Atari barely works so it's no huge deal to give it up.

Of Course That's Just My Opinion, I Could Be Wrong

Well, since you want all of those consoles to be able to plug in, I say you don't actually go with  PC screen.  The reasoning for this is lack of video ports, meaning you probably wouldn't be able to hook up any of the non-HD consoles without some sort of possibly spendy conversion piece.

That being the case, you mentioned you don't really have a budget, but price is the major difference in a lot of tvs.  Looking at the Best Buy 21-29" category, Dynex is going to be one of your cheapest brands, but they do receive really good reviews.  In this case a 1080p 24" is $249.99, 720p 22" is $199.99, 720p 26" is $279.99.

If you're looking for a product that might be a little more dependable, and the ratings are even higher (about .2 higher on a 5.0 scale), you could look at a Samsung, but these will run more in the $399.99 to $499.99 range for similar products.

All of these tvs are going to be 60Hz refresh rate, which is fine for what you are doing on them, especially with the older consoles.

There are a couple of other brands in this size range, such as Toshiba, but I'm not 100% sure about their quality.

Personally, I'd buy this one: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Dynex™ - 24" Class / 1080p / 60Hz / LCD HDTV/9848048.p?id=1218183918195&skuId=9848048 ...that's the 24" Dynex for $249.99, I just can't see paying any more than that for this size tv when this one offers everything the others offer and has great reviews.

Money can't buy happiness. Just video games, which make me happy.

Why don't you get one which can be used for a monitor as well if your monitor isn't any good there?

Tease.

Thanks for the advice, I'll start looking into those!

I do need a second monitor so I stop stealing The Wife's but the problem is where my computer is sit on the other side of the room from my TV.  Luckily that's not a large area but it's still annoying enough.

I have been considering moving the room around because it is just an odd shape, I just haven't really got the energy to get around to doing it.

If you haven't yet purchased one, I saw a wonderful deal this week.  At Target, Vizio has a 22" 1080p 60 Hz LED TV for $249.99

Can hook your PC to it, your PS3, 360 and Wii :)

$339 for a 32" isn't a bad deal

Unicorns ARE real - They are just fat, grey and called Rhinos

Hmm, that one does look pretty nice, hopefully something like that will be around when I buy the TV (probably January if I do).  I don't mind going bigger than 29", I just figure that's the good generic range I'm going for.
