WiiMote Plus includes 3D gyros, like PS Move did before. Is it a rip-off?

Yes 18 13.04%

YES!!! Usual Nintendo beh... 41 29.71%

No 55 39.86%

NOOOOO! (plummets into denial) 3 2.17%

It's alien tech, both copied MS 7 5.07%

What's a WiiMote? 14 10.14%

Erm...it's the other way around. With MotionPlus Nintendo was the first platform holder to use a gyroscope in a controller. It's also a current-gen gyroscope (using MEMS technology) unlike the gyroscope in the Move controller which is a last-gen gyroscope (using IC technology). The weird thing is that the Magnetometer in the Move controller uses MEMS technology, but as far as I understand it they wouldn't need to use a Magnetometer if they used a MEMS gyroscope in the first place. Maybe it was cheaper to do things that way..? Only reason I can think of.

The RemotePlus just has the MotionPlus expansion built-in to save you buying a seperate MotionPlus expansion. There's no difference between the RemotePlus and a bog-standard Wii Remote with a MotionPlus expansion plugged in.

AND THIS THREAD NOW HAS LIFT-OFF!!!

Gyroscopes have been used by Nintendo since the GBC, Also WM came out before the Move. In the end Sony usually copies Nintendo however both do contribute to the evolution of the market. Eventually if its a good idea then the other two competitors will usually follow suit. Natural progression occurs like the jump to 3D and HD for example its only natural for all three competitors to go in these directions.

Just look at PSEye and Kinect, everyone knew camera's could be used in gaming it was only natural for the competition to use similiar technology. All be it Nintendo who doesn't like to release copied technologies. Then again who knows what Nintendo's next home console will have to make it unique.

I c wut u did there...

Nintendo also copied Sony in the use of 3d tech in their consoles...

The virtual boy is such a PS3 ripoff

And that's still nothing! I just realized that with Wii Nintendo dropped its previous blocky, Lego or Fisher-Price -like style, adopting a much sleeker one that's nothing else than Sony PS3 style painted white, or, if we want to credit every possible inspiration, the against nature fruit of a PS3 having sex with an iPod!

Uhm, can you explain this or provide links? As far as I understand MEMS is simply a set of techs to create very small mechanical devices, but the end product is of course interfaced to as an integrated circuit (IC), so I can't see why you're posing them as competing techs.

Thus I'd say that while it's known how WiiMP' chips are MEMS-based IC provided by InvenSense, the teardown of the PS Move by ifixit tentatively pointed to a chip as the gyro, but no further details are known. Thus why should not it be MEMS based as well, since it's a common and inexpensive tech at tis point?

Finally, a gyro chip being MEMS-based has nothing to do with the advantages of also having a MEMS magnetic compass chip. The compass provides an absolute orientation reading relative to the earth magnetic field, thus it can help in automatically recalibrating the rotations, as gyros only measure angular variations with a given resolution and are thus subject to the well known drifting.

This could be just as funny as when Nintendo decide to use HD.

You do realize this is a joke ... (?)

As to HD, Nintendo already said they would, just that it wouldn't be the primary focus/reason of their next console.

I just lost my appetite. Seems that "each person has his own taste" is indeed true...
