I don't know where you live but I read recently that Mario was rivaling Mickey Mouse as the worlds most popular mascot/cartoon character. Also I even today hear people say "Do you have any Nintendo games" its not as common as it was in the 90's but people still call video games Nintendo games. I remember back during the Genesis people would talk about playing their Nintendo games, but it was Genesis games not Nintendo. Fact is Nintendo synonymous with video games. Everyone who know anything about video games knows about Nintendo. Nintendo didn't need a brand like PlayStation, their name alone sells alot of products. DS and Wii both prove Nintendo doesn't need to brand everything the same way. The Nintendo brand is strong enough to sell any product they send to market. P.S - the Nintendo logo is on every Nintendo product. Where as I don't think every PlayStation product says Sony or every Microsoft product says Microsoft. Nintendo as a brand is the most popular in the gaming world, Wii added to its popularity but wasn't soley responsable for it. |
I agree, but I am talking about the common person who isn't into finding out more about gaming, but are an impulse buyer who get the latest gadgets and the parents who buy games for their kids.
like the iphone a lot of people do not know apple makes it, but buy it because it is cool to own an iphone.
Wii is the cool thing to buy. If oyu don't have one you ain't cool.
I reackon Kinet will have the same affect.
Some people here on tv have reported Kinect to be the next generation microsoft xbox.
To like 70% of the public out there it is about branding. only 30% really know the full detail of their products.
The mistake I noticed that people have made in this thread is they are thinking like gamers. Sony exapnded the market beyond the gamer. These are the people that follow brand names.
So... how would you name it in Japan? famicom again?
yeah... that's a 1993 "slim" model...

Face the future.. Gamecenter ID: nikkom_nl (oh no he didn't!!)

I think "NES" fits good enough the japanese market...

Sorry I can't believe I messed that up! But 64 tanked and So did GameCube, both of them also had Nintendo at the beginning of their names. Nintendo64 was known as Nintendo64 while yah people forgot Nintendo at the beginning of GameCube but the logo was still all over the box.
I think Nintendo's reputation just slipped as SNES sold far fewer units then NES. I think its all do to marketing and product distribution to be honest. I guess it would be interesting to see how the Wii2 would sell marketed as Wii2.

I could see New NES.
But then I can also see New Wii.

Did you read my post? 80% of all people know Nintendo and they sure as hell know Nintendo produces the Wii. People aren' that stupid.
Bolded: This is not true. Nobody buys a product because of brand name alone. It just makes you buy the product if you are on the fence.

I did read your post. I don't agree with it. Most general public know playstation and now they know Wii. It isn't about being stupid but about not caring who made it. These are the brand driven people. The lasted hip thing is a must buy for them because everyone has it so they must.
The people your talking about already know about gaming and who go reading game reviews before buying games.
Look at the crap that sells on Wii. Gamers are not buying those games.

This is not an opinion. It's a fact I just posted. There are also other statistics that prove your claim wrong. The people you describe are "hedonists", people who buy things because they are hip and trendy. Those people are only a small minority of the population, though.
And the people I'm talking are no gamers. It was an opinion poll that acucrately represented the german society. Just like voting intentions are represented in opinion polls. This is not about a special sort of people, 80% of all people in Germany know the brand.
Going by your last sentence you don't know what upmarkets and downmarkets are, either.
As I said this is not an opinion, it is fact. Economy isn't based on opinions, it's science. You can't "dissagree" with it.
