Forums - PC - new laptop

I just got a "new" laptop. It's actually my first. Got it from a friend of mine for my birthday. Anyways, here are the specs:

40 GB HDD

512 MB RAM

Pentium 4 Mobile CPU @ 2.00 GHz

Nvidia graphics (dxdiag is not showing up anything, but before I formatted the drive and reinstalled XP, dxdiag said this thing was rockin' a Nvidia card)

It might be a GeForce 4 or something.

Anyways, I increased the VRAM to 4 gigs, making this thing actually run a few programs and stream video better. I know this isn't the greatest thing ever, but when you don't currently own a computer and your hobby is making the unfixable work, well, it was an opportunity I couldn't pass up.

Any suggestions for a hard drive solution? Or should I spring for an external drive?

Thanks for your suggestions/rude comments/mockery lol.
