I commend Iwata for not blaming other factors for a slump unlike another company cough*capcom*cough.  But if he's admitting this he probably has a plan of some kind.

Just what I was thinking, this could mean Nintendo will release a new next gen system sooner then expected; or if not a way of revitalizing the current Wii in someway.

Umm where have you been. Nintendo has said many times its home platforms have a lifecycle of 5 years. 2011 will be the fifth year. Infact I suspect N6 will launch later than expected in Spring 2012 due to the 3DS being pushed off till Spring 2011. Nintendo will not likely release both its home and portable next gen platforms in the same year.

Now you'd argue why not Winter 2011. Well I just told you why. The 3DS will need at least one Christmas season in stock (No shortages) to gain a significant market share. If N6 was released it would cannabalize the 3DS stealing sales from Nintendo handheld. Another good reason is Nintendo won't have enough N6 units manufactured to really supply the market, Nintendo would sell out all its stock over Christmas but it would still sell out if released in spring so why should Nintendo launch new hardware during the Christmas season?

In the end I think Iwata is pretty much confirming N6 for next E3, when Nintendo heads start saying their platform is waining then you know their next offering is right around the corner.

Dont worry the wii will be fine.

How do you know that? I mean I love the optimism, but sometimes empty posts like these annoy me.

At least give a few reasons on why YOU believe that Wii will be fine. Remember to put IMO at the end.

That's not really your concern. If he thinks it'll be fine, then it'll be fine. Period.

He's allowed to his opinion. That's not up to you to determine how he needs to state his opinion. I'm in agreement with him, I think the Wii will be just fine.

There you said it. You think it will happen, you didn't state it will happen. Two different things. Have he worded it correctly I wouldn't have minded.

Besides going by your logic, it's none of your concern to care for what I think it's right or wrong, period.

Fullfilled Prophecies

Wii has been around since 2006; so seeing a 5 year typical cycle the Wii is still selling well enough to surpass that!!!  In any case Nintendo could drop the price to $149.99 with the new Wii Remote Plus, WSR, add a VC game or two like SMB-3 and LoZ: OoT and sales would be fine.  The Wii cost low enough for Nintendo to manufacture to maybe even lower it to $129 if the need even arise to that (I doubt it will).  I will do a Patcher and predict the bundle I mentioned to come after Thanksgiving or before Christmas to spurce up needed sales!!!

also a bundled demo disc with a revamped *cough* Player's Choice *cough* could do wonders for sales!!! Japan has it with those awesome black cases why not here?

Wii has peaked, but it'll probably be another 2 years at least before the next console comes out

His concern is just in determining how long to wait, a really bad holiday would probably push the next console up faster, but the lineup indicates that Wii will see a very good holiday this year, so I don;t think Nintendo has much to worry about

And it won't be a Wii 2 or a Super Wii, it'll be something very different

Here's why Wii will be fine, its overtracking the PS2 and its competitors, and has a pretty good holiday lineup, and Wii tends to do explosive sales in the holidays

They don't really need to worry, 3DS will be out next year and I imagin Wii 2 or whatever's next is round the corner.

Can't see Wii having a lifespan similar to PS2 at this stage though ..

Why not? Please tell me you have a better reason than just the sales aren't super hot right now.

Well its not "super hot" right now. I'm reluctant to believe it'll be "super hot" again.

It does a good job catering to its fans. But I think the masses will continue to look elsewhere.

So what?  You do realize its still overtracking the PS2 in sales right, its not super hot is still far hotter than the 360 and PS3 as well

The Masses are still looking at Wii

Are they? Definitely not like they used too.

But maybe they will again during the holidays.

Still more than the competition, for the year, Wii is still far ahead of PS3 and 360

And without any real good software releases

The lowest year for Wii would be an amazing year for PS3 and 360
