Forums - General - Elton John: Lady GaGa's Born will completely get rid of Gloria Gaynor’s 'I Will Survive

Wow....So I guess it's fair to say Elton John wouldn't know good music if it punched him in the face.

I've heard that song, it's honestly not the greatest. It's good, but it doesn't even compare to some of Lady Gaga's best stuff.

Where did you hear it? I wasn't aware it was available yet.

I'm totally with Leo-J on this one. Not only is Lady Gaga classically trained at playing piano, but she has a phenomenal voice. Anyone who disagrees is just in denial.

And yeah she has pop songs that might not seem that deep, but her lesser-known songs showcase her songwriting ability.

Sure, most music nowadays is terrible, but anyone who says good music isn't being made anymore is just old-fashioned or a classic rock elitist.. God know there are tons of them.

What about people who think good music is still being made but Lady Gaga isn't the one making it?

As far as new music goes, I see Lady Gaga as being not just at the top of the mountain, but on a tower at the top of the mountain.

From a musical standpoint, she merges vocals and music flawlessly. She is one of the few singers out there who can switch up her style of singing multiple times in a song, and have it sound excellent. Usually when a song does that, they have multiple vocalists. The very composition itself takes talent, the fact that Lady Gaga can deliver it live is fairly amazing.

...

I see pretty much the opposite. She's really fairly bland musically.

Lady Gaga is better than most out there really. I just think her success is getting on other people's nerves, which is quite sad actually

Edit: and no Elton... i will survive is not a song for the gays!

Elton John makes one big mistake here (and it's the same Lady Gaga already made with declaring here next whatever the biggest whatever):

You can't give a song an attribute before it's even released, a song has to become a (gay or whatever) "anthem" on its own merits. Neither I Will Survive, It's Raining Men nor YMCA were "gay anthems" before they were released (I didn't even know until now that I Will Surive was considered a gay anthem).

I bet We Are The Champions wasn't planned by Mercury & Co. as a worldwide sports stadium anthem either. Imagine didn't become a freedom anthem because Lennon said so beforehand (but I bet he hoped). It doesn't work that way.

Go West by Village People (made famous by the Pet Shop Boys) ironically became a football anthem.

I'm surprised Elton John made this mistake as I'm pretty sure stereotyped thinking is the last thing gay people want. Why does he declare a song "the new gay anthem." and then say "Actually, it's not a gay anthem - it can apply to anybody."

It seems with the last part Elton suddenly remembered that all his career he was the one who was (successfully) fighting against stereotyped thinking, not the one with the narrow mind.

Ok so my first use of the word good wasn't right. I should have said Elton John wouldn't know amazing music....and then carried on. What he is doing here is comparing this new Lady Gaga song to an anthem. What I'm saying is that this is not even close to being Lady Gaga's best song ever. It's good, but he's making it seem like its her best.

Where did you hear the new song? I am curious.
