Forums - Gaming - How to actually enjoy the games you play!

Severance said:

i've seen a lot of people being too critical about games and expect really too much out of them , people on the forums either buy a game just to review it or find "Whats so good about this that made people like it" and then come out disapointed, whats really sad as well is that people became very very critical on games nowadays which lead to a lot of people being all "man games used to be sooo good in my days" and whine about it, its not really true , its you who changed the way you play your games, you used to play games without knowing ANYTHING about them , and without any influnce of fanboys on the forums or the fans who say "its the best game ever!! because of blah blah"  so i thought i'd share with you guys some of the things you should do to ENJOY playing games

  • Never Play a Game just to see whats so good about it, because you WILL be disappointed.
  • try to avoid reviews and spoilers all together, that way you will be surprised of the storyline or the level design
  • do NOT spend a lot of times looking for "New Info" , that way you won't get bored of the game's features
  • try avoiding forum-goers and other gamers ,believe me, they're going to whine about stuff you'll never notice when playing games.
  • Never play a game just to review it, because when you review a game, its a normal thing that you are looking for the negatives rather than actually enjoying the experience
  • Do not play mutliple games at once, you will lose track of the storyline and will lose the sense of immersion
  • Do not multitask when playing a game, it will be dull and you'll get bored fast (for example don't go on forums while playing games)
  • try to avoid coop online play when you first get the game, for example, play Halo Reach on single player at first then after finishing it , play Online , because most of the times the other people playing will for example, skip cutscenes, finish the level for you, will slow you down, or will do retarded things to get achievements or trophies, that all will make you feel underwhelmed with the campaign.
  • Try avoiding fans , they will recommend you a game just because its made by a certain developer.
  • play the games that YOU want to play, for example you want to play a JRPG but the reviews were harsh about it , you give them the finger and play it and enjoy it.
  • Be open minded, just because the game is in a certain genre don't be like "Ahhh its an FPS the storyline is going to suck , i'll be playing it with my finger stuck on my nose" but rather "its an FPS, it will be an interesting experience!" try it ! its not hard!
  • Do not play a game just for completion sake!, try avoiding trophies or achievement hunting  all together on your first playthrough.
  • if you don't enjoy it ,then give it a better shot, if you still don't enjoy it then its not the game that suck, its just not for you.

but if i did that then i would never have played Shadow of the Colossus or Psychonauts.   I do apply to this to all wii games from now on, since ive had too many problems, but other systems ive still got a decent ratio going for good:bad games based on it.

i meant to say that don't play them just because you want to see whats  all the rage about, but rather play them for fun.

if you enter a game with a "okay whats so good about this?" you will get out disappointed.

you should be the posterboy for bankrupt 3rd parties. "our games don't suck it's you, the customer, who's buying, choosing, and playing them all wrong!"

i don't know a single product that requires you to have all that knowledge beforehand, before you can use it to its fullest extent. are we seeing a new evolution of the "hardcore" gamer? too bad "teh casualz" haven't even caught up to this generation's hardecorrez. maybe if they weren't so close minded and played gaming masterpieces like Metroid: Other M and Heavy Rain, they'll see the light.

well done, OP

I don't like the idea, implied by your last bullet point, that there's no such thing as a bad game.

He was implying that when someone doesn't like a game because it doesnt' suit their taste, they claim "the game sucks" when in reality they should just say "I didn't like it personally."

The only time you should say a game sucks, is when it really sucks.

For instance, I could say that LBP sucks, but in actuality, it doesn't suck, I just hated it, because of my personal and possibly horrible taste.

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.
I don't need your console war.

NO NO, NO NO NO.

Points for online:

1. remember you aren't playing to impress anyone

2. Its not a competition, you are not going to get a prize at the end of the match

3. forget K/D its a waste of time and ruins the experience Completly

4. play with uncompetitive people: its really fun

5. Clam DOWN people stop doing " What the Hell, How did you KiLL me"...throws controller...rage quits. Just take a deep breath and remember its just a game and "Who cares" your friends aren't going to turn around and say "you bad i am not going to be your friend anymore" (your real life ones, as your virtual ones may)

6. Play for the Win and if you Win you Win if you lose you lose, but dont worry if you aren't winning.

I need to add a disclaimer to number 5, which is impossible in Gears of War 2. How anybody plays that game without screaming or bouncing their controller across the room is beyond me.

is it that bad? i've played a bit of it before owning a 360 and it was fine, but now i have a 360 i can't get past the "Matchmaking" screen , it keeps telling me that its searching for players.

I could go on a rant about how garbage the multiplayer is. The only reason I play it is because my friend loves it. For starters, there's host advantage where the host gets a one shot kill with a shotgun against anyone who gets near him, while his body is a sponge and can absorb numerous shotgun rounds without going down. This combined with the horrific melee, which has an auto lock (you don't have to be accurate with it at all) and does more damage than most guns in the game do. The auto lock and damage caused by the melee result in numerous two piecing. About 30% of the kills I see on a nightly basis are two pieces. This game will make you want to yell and scream and smash your controller into smithereens for legitimate reason, because it genuinely is the game's fault. Then there's jerks on your team who will run up and steal kills on people you've downed (happens to me on a nightly basis). I can live with that, but host advantage, horrible hit detection, and the melee are all horrific at best. I'd like to see the melee permanently removed from the game, as it gets abused and is pretty much an automatic two piece every time if they have a shotgun.

My favorite moments last night consisted of me sticking the barrel of my shotgun in the enemy's back, shooting twice, then having somebody come right behind me and one shot me right into the wall. The best moment though had to be getting one shot by a computer player who wasn't even looking at me.

themanwithnoname's law: As an America's sales or NPD thread grows longer, the probabilty of the comment "America = World" [sarcasticly] being made approaches 1.

You lose me everytime when you bitch about reviews.

Great games generally get great reviews. I rarely recommend a game critics pan.

what i meant is dont look too much in it, since reviews often talk about everything on the game so you wont be surprised at all.
