Forums - Sales - Financial Times Germany: Wii at 30.2% worldwide market share

-- "Sold units in million: wii 2007: 6 mn., 2008: 18 mn.; ps3: 2007: 5 mn., 2008: 9 mn.; X360: 2007: 7 mn., 2008: 11 mn." --

that pretty much agrees with the shipment numbers.

see here:

ConsoleWiiPS3X360
Total
5,772,972
2,802,833
6,928,341

see Wii is just short of 6 mil, and 360 just short of 7 mil during the fiscal year 2007 (which ended last March)

PS3 they are still going by shipment numbers....it's just that Sony with all their confusing BS still classed produced as shipped (unlike Ninty and MS who use retail sales)

clearly the FTimes didn't get Sony's new retail number which was 3.7 mill (i think?...it was between 3 and 4 definately anyway)

Just for a comparison, the Xbox + Gamcube +xbox 360 + Ps3+ wii Wii. Im also not saying the Wii wont sell 100 million + systems. Im just saying the 360 or PS3 or both will sell 60 million + along side with it.

the only thing that irritated me was them stating it was in 2007 and 2008, not in FY 2007 and FY 2008, which is a bit different, to say the least....

Rol, didn't you also say the Wii would easily beat the Xbox 360's NA sales, and have a counter for the past few months, taking it down when it was deemed vastly impossible?

No system has ever, ever, started out with a decent marketshare, and gone on to totally dominate the marketshare %, expect *maybe* the PS1, since it had the Saturn to compete with in the beginning.

Not only this, global marketshare for the Wii has been about 40-45% since the beginning of October. Yes, the Wii might have more supply next year, but why do you just assume the PS3 and X360 will roll over, and never have anything to compete next year? You do realize the Wii has a very weak Western lineup (from what I've seen) for 08, don't you? The X360/PS3 have Fallout, Army of Two, GTAIV, Silent Hill 5, RE5, and about 30 other mid-sized games that aren't coming out on the Wii, not to mention other exclusives (but the Wii games cancell that out).

So with huge multi-plat games like GTAIV, with the Wii having absolutely no comparible 3rd party game, why is the Wii going to suddenly increase it's marketshare? If games matter, then the Wii will see decreased marketshare vs. a more competitive field with reduced price X360s and PS3s next year vs. a Wii that's seen the bulk of it's cards on the table by mid-08 (atleast for the rest of the year).

As always, absolutes that are supposed to defend the PS3 and XBox 360 end up being wrong ...

For the first 12 months that they were on the market, the Nintendo DS sold (roughly) 8 Million units as compared to (roughly) 5 Million units for the PSP; this works out to a 60%-40% split in favour of the Nintendo DS. Currently the Nintendo DS holds 68% and their sales for 2007 are:

VGChartz Hardware data for the period 31st Dec 2006 to 02nd Dec 2007:

ConsolePSPDS
Total
8,998,487
23,445,466

Which demonstrates that the DS is capturing 72% of the marketshare in 2007 (so far); when you look at holiday sales alone:

VGChartz Hardware data for the period 04th Nov 2007 to 02nd Dec 2007:

ConsolePSPDS
Total
1,340,961
4,022,026

The Nintendo DS is taking (roughly) 75% of the market ...

The Nintendo DS is going from a reasonably balanced 60-40 split to the dominant 75-25 split, while everyone claimed that the extra processing power and media functionality of the PSP would make it more popular later in its life.

Two words: Supply limited

Pretty much right on the money.

http://www.techspot.com/news/27988-amazon-sells-1400-wii-units-in-10-minutes.html

Also keep in mind the you can't think of the Wii in terms of regular video game consoles, the appeal is far too broad.  They're leaving everyone in the dust this generation.

However, I think the PS3 will end up in 2nd place if next year's games are successful. I was checking out IGN earlier and the hype for GTA4 for the PS3 was higher than the 360. The 360 seems to be going after not only PS3's market, but the PC (FPS and RTS games), and Wii (their casual machine).

The PC part is especially important since we've just had the biggest tech jump in 10 years and the hardware is very affordable. The nvidia 8800 GT is sold out all over, a great sign for PC games, and the PC already has Gears of War, Orange Box, CoD 4, UT3, Bioshock, and probably 99% of the FPS that the 360 will get, and with all of those games the PC version is better.

In the PC forum there's a great thread about what's coming up for the PC, and the 2008 lineup is incredible.  This could be a revival of the 1996-2001 PC era.

If it is a PC revival, that's a big bite in the ass to the 360, and while the PS3 doesn't have a ton of games right now, their selection is incredibly diverse so it won't hit the PS3 anywhere near as hard.

The PC may end up a bigger player in this generation than a lot of people are considering right now.

They don't have to have identical games Rol, just games which can make them compete well against it.

@HappySquirel

but the PSP lets face it is VERY BAD software wise & has no very heavy exclusives

both these things are there for 360 & Ps3...

in short

we shouldn't compare portable & home console markets...

Sony has had it's eye toy series for the PS2, and it will surely come to the PS3 as well, this is a game that can compete with wiifit.
