Forums - Sony - Do you guys think Sony has learned their mistake?

The biggest problem wasnt the price or the late launch, it was the loss of exclusives. i've heard Sony failed to provide enough dev kits to Ubisoft or Bioware, and thus lost Assassin's Creed and Mass Effect as exclusives. MS is rumoured to have paid $100 mil to Rockstar for GTA4 to go to the 360 as a multiplatform. other important exclusives as well like RE5 or FF13. and the Sony first party was comparatively weak compared to the third party.

but the 2nd and 3rd strike was the price and the loss of at least 1 year on it competitors. and for some reason despite being the worst of the 3 consoles, having the worst launch line up and the highest price its still doing pretty well. as long as they release at a competitive price to their competitor, have a solid launch line up - then it could happen.

The PS2 was released about  year after the SEGA Dreamcast its main rival in the 6th Gen the 128bit era. but lack of a DVD player ment that the Dreamcast lost out to the PS2 in Japan because of the DVD boom in Japan fulled by the PS2.

Regarding price SONY seems to have not noticed all the Consoles that failed due to price like the SNK NEOGEO AES at US650 and the PANASONIC #DO at US700.

And I know that some pepole beleve the SEGA Dreamcast was not 6th Gen but acording to Wkipidia it is. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dreamcast

hikaruchan, as impressive at that list is, i think when GTA4 went multiplatform (the PS2 biggest games were the GTA series) other developers decided to do that as well. but yes, the key is also price, as long as Sony has a competitive price, or is maybe even cheaper than the next 360 then i doubt Sony will have a repeat of what happened this gen.

either way, the 2011 launch line up is extremely good and i think next year will be a very good year for the PS3... but not the best until 2012 or maybe 2013.

Ps3 launched at $600. $200 more than xbox 360. PSP launched at $250. $100 more than DS. These are most likely the reasons why they are losing in their respective markets.  Do you think sony will launch psp2 $200 or under and ps4 at $400 or under?

What mistake? all the $600 models was sold out on launch. There wasnt many in stores to begin with.

I remember looking at the confirmed exclusive lineup in 2006 and thinking that I have to get PS3 from launch just because of all the games even if I had a 360 and or wii but as we all know the uncertainty of the PS3 for Developers/Publishers in the first year and a half is what made most games multiplatform.

This Gen as really been about awsome games on all systems though so if you can you really need all systems this Gen like I hated the wii but now I have one for Metroid Other M, Xenoblade, The Last Story and many more hardcore Core Games on the wii and I will be getting a XBOX 360 for older games like Lost Odassey and Blue Dragon on some other games.

I agree that next year and beyond will be much better for SONY this Gen but I think that the way the current Console Scene is becoming unsustainable and that will only get worse if the cost keep going up and up.

SONY need to realize that shooting for the moon is more realistic then shooting for the sun and boring up next time around.

Yeah, true, they've learned what not to do next time. the 1 year lead wouldnt have made a difference from MS had they had kept all their exclusives, and they wouldve kept all their exclusives if they had of launched a lot cheaper. besides the good thing that had resulted in is a massive surge in the quality of first party titles. anyway imo since Sony has just started getting its act together since the Uncharted 2 launch, this gen is going to get a lot better.

Edit: yeah a lot of good games are on the Wii and 360 as well, its just i cant be bothered getting more and more consoles when i'll only be using them for 2 or 3 games. they'll take up too much room etc. however Move might be worth picking up if more Wii titles go cross platform.

i think the launch price for ps3 wasnt 600 because they wanted to, they wanted to use a certain technology that at the time made the console expensive. the price couldnt be avoided unless they delayed launch and waited for thr tech to b more accessible.

i'm glad they did it the way they did and i didnt mind waiting for it to reach the 400 mark for me to get it.

it's still a long way till ps4 so it's hard to predict what tech they might want to implement in 3 or 4 yrs, though i'm sure they are already thinking about it. i dont think it will cost as much at launch though, i do hope it will launch with a nice varied library of games.

psp2... i'd have to know the characteristics but if they bring it with lots of features i wouldnt be surprised of it being over 200 easily. depends also on 3ds price.

Probably will be more reasonably priced. The PS3 came out before a massive hit to the economy. If the PS4 comes out anytime within the next 2 years, it will still eb during an economic lull. At most I'd expect the PS4 to be $400. Anything above that will be suicide in the current world market in these hard times.

I think Sony learned a lot this gen. So I'm guessing from $300 to $400 for the PS4 and PSP2 around the $250 range, if there smart depending on the tech inside it.

I think Sony is going to make a huge come back next gen. Sony lost a lot this gen, Lost exclusives and there losing to M$ and Nintendo. They also lost a lot of money, but there building a huge library of titles and the power can only go up next gen. I just hope they remember they still need third parties and if there next system is easy to develop for they will have that no problem. If they launch at $300 they will win. Sony has the most going for them in my opinion.

I hope they've wised up. I'm very concerned that next gen, bundled motion controls will lead to higher prices. This gen it was 600 for a system and cheap to manufacture controller. Next gen it'll be XXX dollars for a system, plus XX for ps move 2.0. Before they announced move, I'd have said each sku would retail for no more than $400 and be slightly profitable from day 1. But now, I'm thinking they'll make a ps3.5 ($250-350 to produce) and through in a move 2.0 (ps eye 2 move 2.0 and ds4 or nav controller) at their own expense and lose 50-100 bux on each sku.

As for PSP2, if they price it for more than 250, they better justify it. Nintendo can get away with 250-300 because of the tech and all the goodies included. For $300, PSP2 should be a PDA, Tablet or Smartphone as well as a handheld gaming system.

Yes I do, on one hand launching at $600 as proven they can do that and (barely) get away with it.

IF MS can't gain the crown next gen, I hope Sony can.

i'm with Seece on this one.

i hope they learned something. i really don't think we haft to worry about a $600 console ever again?
