The initial JP shipment was 1m and Japanese totals climbed each following quarter (to 1.1m and then 1.15m) so it had at least 3 shipments. Capcom said it met expectations in Japan, but that online subscriptions were far exceeding expectations. Also, the MSRP for MH3 was actually double what MHP2G was originally... while it sold far less, it's possible it's earned more comparable revenue through the higher MSRP and subscription fees. MH3 is actually Japan's best selling subscription based title ever.

Speaking of which, I wonder if MHP3 will also carry a Hunter's License fee for online play?

I was wondering why retailers were jumping on it, and the only response I could think of was maybe they were all excited about "teh hardcorez game," even if it wouldn't make much sense financially.

Your point on the other hand makes much more sense. Have you actually heard anything about this or is it speculation?

Retailers were asked if they wanted a second round of the MH Tri bundle and they all replied with a resounding YES!
