Forums - Nintendo - Mario 3D: Two Players?

Super Mario 64, and Super Mario Sunshine, are both one player games, with no Luigi. Super Mario Galaxy has Luigi, but it's still, basically, a one player game. Wouldn't it be great if we could have a true, two player, 3D Mario game? How would it work, you may ask? Well, one example would be a "who can get the star first" type of game. The screen would be split, and you, as Mario, would race to the star, in any level, and try to get it before your opponent, as Luigi. Easy. Why didn't we get this? I have no idea... I can definitely see it working, 100%. Why don't we have any two player, 3D Mario games? We had them for 2D, but why not 3D?

I don't think that's what he's talking about. He's saying split screen adventure mode where someone is Mario and the other is Luigi. They pick a level and a star and they both play as you would in the normal adventure mode. Whoever reaches to the star first wins.

That actually sounds pretty good. That would give it better replay value without adding much.

How do you get split-screen adventure mode when we have never had anything of the sort in any previous Mario platformer, which is what he's referencing?

I don't doubt that he means a two-player adventure mode, though. But he didn't specify, and my point still stands. We DO have 3D Mario with multiplayer.

He is talking about this but with one level.

It would be cool if they made either a game around the idea of online mario coop where both players are required to solve platforming puzzles etc....but as a main series Mario game? it wouldn't get the attention it would need to be any good.

To Each Man, Responsibility

I'm thinking of the next big ideas for Mario (3D), will be "true" co-op gameplay - where say both Luigi & Mario are needed to solve puzzles, etc.

The innovation will be in excellent 'AI' - so playing by yourself, will feel like playing with another real person.
