Forums - Gaming - 8 big games that never released

Snow and Halo MMO sounds interesting.

Starcraft: Ghost - Starcraft II is ruling the charts this year -- but this console-based spin-off probably never will. A stealthy, third-person adventure set in the popular Starcraft universe, it was abandoned in 2006. It’s technically “suspended” and not cancelled as such, and some fans still cling to the faint hope that it might see the light of day at some point.

Super Mario 128 - First named in the late '90s as a follow-up to the seminal Super Mario 64, Mario 128 originally saw the light in 2000 as a tech demo for the then-new Gamecube. Rumors around its development persisted for years but to no avail; bits and pieces of the Mario 128 concept have shown up in other Mario titles, including Super Mario Sunshine and Super Mario Galaxy, however.

Halo MMO - This World of Warcraft-style Halo spin-off was never formally announced, and details only emerged after it had been canned by Microsoft around 2007. With a budget said to have been as much as $90 million, it could be the most expensive cancelled game around.

Warcraft Adventures - Warcraft fans were devastated when this point-and-click adventure was dramatically canned in 1998. It was to have been a light-hearted, hand-drawn 2D affair in the vein of the early Monkey Island games, but developer Blizzard decided it had been outpaced by its competitors and pulled the plug.

Snow - The mid-00s didn’t exactly go well for publisher Take Two. Reeling from the Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas “Hot Coffee” debacle, it took steps to clean up its image -- and one of them was to quietly cancel Snow, which was to have been a drug-dealing sim that let players advance from small-time marijuana pusher to cocaine kingpin.

Fallout 3 (Van Buren) - “But Fallout 3 did release, and it was awesome!” we hear you protest. Indeed it did, and it was -- but an entirely different Fallout 3 project was in development years before only to be cancelled in 2003. Happily, we’ll see some of the story elements from that game show up in this year’s Fallout: New Vegas.

Thrill Kill - Ultraviolent Playstation beat-’em-up Thrill Kill was actually finished and complete when it was abruptly cancelled by publisher EA in 1998. Why? In a press release, the publisher famously said they didn’t want to “publish such a senselessly violent game.” Boy, have times changed.

This is Vegas - Open-world gambling and womanizing sim This Is Vegas always sounded like a bit of a risky bet. Publisher Midway poured as much as $50 million into development of the project, but came up snake-eyes, filing for bankruptcy last year. Warner Bros. picked up the company’s assets -- including Vega -- but word is the game is no more.

Sweet article, but granted it supposedly is coming out now, I really think duke nukem shoulda made the list into a 9 game list.

Money can't buy happiness. Just video games, which make me happy.

This is a poser list. Kinda like those rolling stone best guitar player lists which have Kurt Kobain listed in the top 5 every year.

Real list would have games like Socin Xtreme, Star Fox 2,  Shenmue for the Saturn...etc

Starfox 2 should've been included

ummm interesting

the StarCraft one wouldn't of happened as they knew they would be slaughtered by Medal Gear Solid 4

Of Course That's Just My Opinion, I Could Be Wrong

You can actually play the full version of Thrill Kill. Though the game was never officially released, there are bootleg versions which contain the full version. If you search the torrent sites you'll find it somewhere. Funny thing is, I once had a PSone with a modchip. A friend of me donated me all his burned games, and one of these games was Thrill Kill. The game is indeed bloody and a obscure: For example one of the characters is basically two torsos sewed together. If you made enough damage to your enemies, you can unleash a fatal blow, similar to Mortal Kombat, where you can rip apart their bodies. The amount of blood and gore is exaggerated. There are literally 20 litres of blood spreading around.

But, god, the game was awful. Terribly awful.

Back then I could understand EA for not releasing such a game. It would have created a big outcry. By today's standards the game could have been actually released.

updated: 14.01.2012

playing right now: Xenoblade Chronicles

Hype-o-meter, from least to most hyped:  the Last Story, Twisted Metal, Mass Effect 3, Final Fantasy XIII-2, Final Fantasy Versus XIII, Playstation ViTA

bet with Mordred11 that Rage will look better on Xbox 360.

I think Battle Front 3 would should be there. Though it was never official announced every one has seen the footage and loved the first 2 games and wants more not the PSP games.

while their are some funny choices, but Shenmue for the Saturn wasn't cancelled it was moved to the dreamcast and was released. As for Sonic xtream that is an interesting tale. Star fox 2 on the other hand isn't that major. If games like that were on the the list I would prefer Ultima Worlds Online: Origin and shattered nations.

Check out my hype threads: Cyberpunk, and The Witcher 3!

Uh, Super Mario 128 did release, they just renamed it Pikmin

I remember getting Thrill Kill as well, although at the time I had no idea it had been canned. If EA had cancelled it because t was generally a poor game then I'd have understood as well, c'os it was pretty poor! I remember one character's finisher was to jump on their opponent and start eating them alive... good times, lol.

OT: Good list.... although it seems odd not having Duke Nukem Forever on it now. I can't believe it's actually gonna release. And the Halo MMO; was that projected budget or actual spend?
