The main reason that I think that it will bomb is because the game will feature Daniel Craig as James Bond and not Pierce Brosnan. More on that later...
The reason that I hope that it bombs is because of some shocking trends that I have stumbled upon. These trends have taken on a life of it's own, as it were, and I have named them the GoldenEye Effect. What is this GoldenEye Effect and how can it be stopped you ask? More on that now...
In 1995 a movie named GoldenEye came out. It was the first James Bond film starring Pierce Brosnan. Truth be told, it was fairly average for a Bond movie (which meant that it was spectacular). The writing was solid, you had a really good villian in Alec Trevelyan, an incredible henchwoman in Xenia Onatopp, and it had edge of your seat excitement. I wasn't the biggest fan of Pierce "my hair is always perfect" Brosnan, but overall it was a job well done. The immediate future looked bright for the series.
On August 25th, 1997 the videogame GoldenEye 007 was released. It was good. So good that many people still consider it the greatest FPS of all time. So good that many people think that it's better than the movie GoldenEye. Regardless of your opinions on this matter, it cannot be denied that it changed gaming forever. It was the first multiplayer FPS to be a mega hit on a console. I know that I spent numerous hours having shootouts in the Facility, the Archives, and all of the other awesome levels. I'm sure that many of you have too. I get warm and fuzzy thinking about the great times I had playing that game.
Unfortunately, approximately 9,283,652 bad FPS have come to consoles since then. Sure there have been some good ones since then, but the majority are a whole lot of crap. This is part of the GoldenEye Efect. Also, unfortunately the GoldenEye Effect leaked extremely quickly into another medium. Action films.
In 1998 Action films were bad. Real bad. So bad that you would swear that they were created by filmmakers that were in awe watching all of the explosions while playing GoldenEye in late 1997. They didn't care about the story though. Just the explosions. If you don't believe me I'll list a few action films that came out in 1998:
Armageddon- Michael Bay at his worst. POW! BAM! KABLOOEY!
Black Dog- It's about a good truck driver (played by Patrick Swayze) being terrorized by a villian that owns a lot of red vehicles named Red (played by Meat Loaf).
Hard Rain- Morgan Freeman is a a bank robber!? and Christian Slater is the armored car driving hero in this movie set during a major flood. It's best action scene includes jet skis in a high school.
Soldier- I don't like bad mouthing Kurt Russell because I actually like him, but this futuristic action film featured him speaking 79 words over 99 minutes. This sounds like a joke but it actually isn't.
One Tough Cop- This movie is great if you think that it's a comedy. Stephen Baldwin's delivery of the line, "Drop the knife!" made me almost wet myself.
Even worse, the GoldenEye Effect started to hurt the Bond series. The next three films that followed GoldenEye are listed in my five worst Bond films ever (Moonraker and A View To A Kill are the other two if anyone cares):
Tomorrow Never Dies- Bond is firing a machine gun through a huge portion of the movie just like John J. Rambo except he's not as buff and is much better dressed. Michelle Yeoh is really good in the action scenes. So good that you that you can see how not good Pierce is.
The World Is Not Enough- My least favorite of the Bond films. Denise Richards is a nuclear physicist!? and there's a scene where helicopters with giant saws cut down a caviar factory. I could go on but that would be an entire thread of it's own.
Die Another Day- Halle Barry has nearly as much screen time as Pierce (WTF???). There's also that scene where Bond parasails down the edge of a melting glacier.
Fortunately the Bond games had been average to horrible since up until and including From Russia With Love. The year after this mediocre game based on a great movie was released, Casino Royale came out. It and Quantum Of Solace were infinitely better than the last three Pierce Brosnan movies. I know that we have Transformers and Resident Evil movies too, but at least things are headed in the right direction. Here's to hoping that GoldenEye is a really crappy game based on a good movie. Bad sales would bode well for the Bond series and action films and general. Ultimately, the GoldenEye Effect would finally be foiled.
I don't think that I have to worry about it bombing though. Daniel Craig's involvement will doom the game. Even though Craig is undoubtedly a better Bond than Brosnan, Pierce is much more believable as a video game character. That's a key factor in explaining why GoldenEye 007 was such a blockbuster game.
