Forums - Gaming - Capcom: DMC4's 2.7m sales not enough, wants 5+ from reboot

this game is NOT going to sell 5 million, it'll be lucky to sell 2 million. Due to CAPCOM and Antoniades' dare I say ARROGANT comments about the series and the reboot they're really not aware of how bad this thing looks for the fans. All this reboot is going to do is make an unneeded entry in the series that the fans will discard in a heart beat and move on from

I think it could do 3.5 maybe 4mil. this is supposed to bring new fans into the series. i think it could be one of those games everyone hates but is actully really good and then it has awful sales to boot, i hope that dosent happen.

i'm really looking forward to it man. its gonna have a great serious story, and its supposed to have more gameplay elements than just combat. new Dante is starting to grow on me. lets face it DMC sold what 2.7mil, thats not bad, but i think theres room for improvement, NT seem to really respect the source material, they just want to make it more accessible to the western audience and improve the stuff that dosent appeal to western fans.... are you even a little convinced yet, lol??

Edit: @Rafux, yeah you have a point, however NT could well be invested in that type of stuff as well, i'm just saying we should give them a chance, i really like what their doing with it.

2.7 million people bought packaged fan service, and they expect Emo Stoned Dante to sell 5 million copies of a game?

"respect the source material"

I really hate that Dante is smoking now.

no, it's not somehow going to bring in THAT many fans, things have NEVER worked out like that. NT is an at best unproven developer whose one supposedly big game was quickly forgotten to the sands of time within a MONTH of its release. For all of HS' pretenses it was just another run of the mill revenge plot trying to thinly disguise itself behind a bunch of flashy spectacle. The gameplay was also hugely lacking as it was a literal GoW knockoff (which was already knocking off DMC and Dante to begin with)

As for Don'te, people have tried this kind of aesthetic before and the result is always the same: it FLOPPED. Ubisoft tried this with PoP and quickly backpedaled to rectify that in Two Thrones. Bionic Commando tried that and the game was a sales disappointment. Heck, Final Fight Streetwise tried this mistaken idea of "grim and gritty" and also FLOPPED. Any time someone has tried to base a character on the "disenfranchised youth" or "trends" in ANY medium they have always been tossed aside BECAUSE NO ONE CARES! NT and CAPCOM have NO clue what they're doing.

Yeah, i admit its unlikely at the moment this will be successful, theres no gameplay trailer, theres a LOT of hate, and NT have only had 2 major games, HS and Enslaved. whether or not HS was a good game or not, never played it - so i wouldnt know. the ethos NT have is very good. they know where the character comes from, they're taking that and adapting it towards the western audience who would NEVER buy DMC as it was.

my point is whether it can excite new fans - looking at God of War sales, there is definitly a market there for awesome action games. but will new fans buy this and why?? i think it has the potential because the serious tone and the gritty character seem more appealing to western auidence than DMC of before.

the only question is can NT nail the gameplay. so imo it needs to be a blend of both the simple but fun style of GOW and Dante's Inferno, but still retain the depth and customisation of before - without overwhealming new players, which i think DMC is - i think its too overwhealming because of the complex combat, which is why that style could never sell over 3mil. imo if NT make it accessible, and if its not the product of 'media sabotage' like Metroid Other M; it will sell!!

I'll sure play the DmC demo (if there is one), but right now I'm not liking the direction NT its taking, of course I can't predict the future but looking at the precedents (GOW, DMC, Dante's Inferno, Heavenly Sword, Bayonetta) hack and slash games sell between 1.2 M to 3.6M, I really doubt DmC will reach 5M but we'll see what happends.

On a side note: God of War 3 is a spectacle you have to see to believe, the production value is superb, graphics, voices, story, design. Its a must have for all PS3 users and the culmination of a epic series which never went down in quality and I think thats the reason it will reach 4M.

Almost forgot, the only gritty reboot that I can remember that worked really good was Megaman X.

By the way there's a recent gritty reboot coming: Epic Mickey

Lets see what happends.

Thanks a lot, I had that sufficiently blocked before you mentioned it. Pretty much the only "grim and gritty" reboot that worked was Twisted Metal. Everything has failed miserably. You'd think that this would make developers realize that they should stop trying to sell that kind of godawful aesthetic

i am in agreement with both u guys. Even though this newly concieved dante doesn't blow me away nt have shown glimpses with heavenly sword that they can produce a combat system with depth. I will reserve any sort of judgement till i see the gameplay.

besides even if the character is lame it wont be the first game i've played where i didn't like the character eg mgs 2/ raiden! still finished it four times cause the actual game was rock solid
