Forums - Nintendo - SSB DS

Nintendo could do so many great things...a new Pikmin, a new Animal Crossing, those are sure to be good...otherwise they could make a new Star Fox, Donkey Kong platformer, whatever....there's lots to pick from...we all know they're not going to do it all though...just not enough time and resources to devote full attention to such games.

Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

I don't know, I feel like smash would lose something by going to handhelds. I guess it's just one of those games that I feel is built for sitting together around a big tv cursing one another.

Exactly. If Nintendo would create only one new game out of every franchise that had some success for both of their systems, I personally had enough games to play until the end of the generation. The thing is, you never know which ones they are going to make, who is going to make them when they will release...

Currently Playing: Skies of Arcadia Legends (GC), Dragon Quest IV (DS)

Last Game beaten: The Rub Rabbits(DS)

The only problem I see is storage space. So probably instead of adding lots and lots of collectibles like stickers and trophy's I think they have to focus on the single player by euhm adding more collectibles hehe.

I'd like to see it.
I never minded playing the CPU's, and the AI was much better in Melee, and I am expecting more out of Brawl.

add me, the more the merrier.

I would love to see a SSB DS, especially with local wireless play with only one game, the graphics would be a little better then the N64 version and it would have to have a longer story mode like Brawl because you can't always play with other people. I see it happening.

Nintendo still doomed?
Feel free to add me on 3DS or Switch! (PM me if you do ^-^)

There WILL be a Smash Bros. DS.

We should also expect a WaveRace DS, Paper Mario DS, one more Mario platformer (primarily 2.5D, but I'd bet they'll throw in a little 3D stuff (kinda like SMG had a little 2.5D stuff), a Pilotwings DS (mainly a port of Pilotwings 64 with some extra content), and one or two other franchises brought to the handheld scene.

you WANT a Smash Bros DS, a WaveRace DS, Paper Mario DS...it's not guaranteed to happen though.

Did I say I want those? I'm fairly certain I didn't. Pay attention next time.

Nintendo does what is wisest for their franchises and games, because, well, that's almost all they have for themselves.

Thus said, it is wisest for them to release what they know will do very, very well, and win over more people to purchasing their consoles and games. So, even if I said that's what I want... well, then! That's exactly why Nintendo would release them anyways, isn't it?

Since supply for the DS hasn't been an issue for them, it is wise to continue turning out excellent games that people want. Additionally, the DS has been a huge cash-crop for N64 port-esque games and returning old franchises/games (see: various Final Fantasy ports in 3D).

A simple port of WaveRace 64 with enhanced multiplayer, online options, and some added content would have very low development costs and very high (in relation) profitability. Same with a simple port of Pilotwings 64. Not saying I'd expect a port, but at the very least, it'd be foolish not to release something, as many, many gamers would love to get their hands on that. Additionally, it fits their current strategy extremely well.

A Paper Mario DS game would fit the exact strategy that Nintendo has been taking with Mario games. Notice how there's been a Paper Mario game on each major console since N64. Notice how Mario Party is primarily a console title as well, and has been on each major console since N64. Notice how it recently went to the DS. Paper Mario DS would very, very easily be able to have ALL the same concepts and features as the console counterparts.

A new Mario platformer (New Super Mario Bros. 2? Newer Super Mario Bros? New Super Mario Land/World? I dunno) is extremely likely, as New Super Mario Bros. has sold so phenomenally. I wouldn't expect it for another year or so, as it would likely hurt NSMB's potential sales continuation. And, let's face it. Another platformer along the same vein as NSMB is something that everybody wants.

And to finish with the games, Smash Bros DS, as well. It's seen an iteration on each major console now since N64, and Nintendo's been continuously bringing their megahitter franchises to the DS in epic ways.

Lastly, look at the sales of first-party titles on the DS vs. those on the GCN or Wii. Nintendogs sells nearly 16m worldwide. NSMB sellsabout 11.5m. Animal Crossing: Wild World sells 8.25m, and Mario Kart DS sellsabout 8.25m too. Meanwhile, the highest selling GCN games ever both sold about 6.6m, and so far, the best-selling non-pack-in title for Wii has been a little shy of 4m (which is still absolutely fantastic, don't get me wrong). Heck, New Super Mario Bros. is within throwing distance of Super Mario 64's lifetime sales! What I'm saying, though, is that they have a huge, huge market on the DS. Millions of copies basically guaranteed with these franchises (ESPECIALLY Smash Bros. DS and Paper Mario DS). Comparing sales of previous Paper Mario titles, I'd estimate a minimum total sales count of 5m of a Paper Mario DS. Working with WaveRace 64 sales, I'd estimate a minimum of 5m. Pilotwings, 4m. Smash Bros DS, easily 10m and possibly 15m.

I never said any of these (except a Smash Bros. DS) were guaranteed. I just said we should expect them. Meaning that they're very, very likely (because logic says they are). Smash Bros. DS is just the most logical (by far), and I think that's too obviously a good decision for Nintendo to mess up on. They've brought much less obviously-intelligent franchises to the DS. With that said, I really think it WILL happen.
