Lady Gaga's rally was a failure. The bill was defeated.

Yeah, but it wasn't defeated because of the repeal to don't ask don't tell ... It was a gigantic omnibus bill which the Democrats were trying to limit amendments and debate on the bill. Had this been a serious attempt to repeal don't ask don't tell, rather than a transparent political ploy, the repeal of don't ask don't tell would be a stand alone bill.

Isn't Obama against this too?

this is exactly what happened.  It is this crap that politicians pull by trying to sneak their agenda through in the name of something else that pisses me off more than anything.  Republicans just as guilty.

We shouldn't need a 40-60 majority to have a functioning senate. We really shouldn't (though i'm not entirely blaming Republicans on that, but the group-think mentality that means not one of those 41 would actually support this)

It really wasn't a don't ask don't tell bill it was appropriating funds for the military. One of the things in the bill was repealing Don't ask don't tell 

And  for smoother ride to citizenship for illegal aliens
