Forums - Sony - Assuming that PS3 launched at $400 back in Nov. 2006

Well just saying, Microsoft would not be able to compete at the time head on at the same price. They would have had to slash their prices. Even if Sony would still be third. Microsoft didnt get its legs until Halo 3 came out. People would have blindly gotten the PS3 even if it had inferior games just because it was Playstation. Look at the Wii, it had horrid games all year until Metroid and Mario Galaxy other than Zelda.

The 360 only has FPS and nothing else. Stupid generalisations FTW!!!

But you are right, people would have blindly bought the PS3 because it is a Playstation. If it launched at $400, Microsoft would have dropped their price already last November.

Agreed with Rol. Actually it's funny how much more horrid library 360 and PS3 had all year than what Wii had all year.

Ei Kiinasti.

Nintendo games sell only on Nintendo system.

If Sony could've sold the PS3 for $400, it would've killed the 360. I really wanted a PS3 at launch. I was caught up in the hype. (Un)fortunately I couldn't find one anywhere. In January, I saw the PS3 on store shelves, but could not think of anything I really wanted to play for $600. I wound up getting a 360, Gears, and a few older discount games, and never looked back.

I'm getting a PS3 in 2008, but that price tag has done it's damage. What a boner killer!

I find that assumptions like this are fairly unrealistic being that the decision to launch at a reduced price for the PS3 would have probably meant that the functionality of the PS3 would be reduced (potentially losing Blu-Ray playback, Backwards Compatibility, and the Hard-drive); and their competition would have made different choices to make their product more competitive.

Would a $400 PS3 without Blu-Ray playback be as popular as a $300 XBox 360 and $200 Wii?

If the wii were at $249.99

the ps3 at $399.99(60gb)

and the X360 at $399.99

The ps3 would not be ahead of anyone, but it would be near 10M at this point.

It was availability not price IMO. People would have paid 599 for a PS3, but with the Xbox being available and cheaper with games already, disappointed Sony fans picked that up instead.

I dont think the PS3 would have sold better unless it matched the XBox's price, so if Sony launched at 399, and could match the 360 than thats a different story. But I could see the Xbox dropping price to maintain that advantage.

Probably closer to 8 (maybe 8.5) Million ...

and Sony would have lost $2 Billion more on the PS3, the company as a whole would have been unprofitable, Howard Stringer would be seen as a failure and the stockholders would vote him out, and the company as a whole would undergo restructuring.

i dont think it would of been ahead, but it probably would of sold about 8mil by now

The general topic has no assumptions of its own. It merely asks for other people's assumptions. I then went on to post my own assumption to my own question, Still not detering other people from posting their own assumptions. Its a "what if" topic.  And in my own personal opinion, remembering the hype for the PS3, Yes a $400 PS3 with a blue ray player would have destroyed an inferior Xbox 360 for $300 without a blue ray player back in the fall of 2006. Now, after a year though of Sony losing significant mindshare, they are about even with the 360.

If released on 400$ it would have been about 10 million by now.

Now if it would have been at $300 it would have been were the wii is.
