Forums - Sony - Future Playstation Products Will be Easier to Program says Yoshida

adsl said:

Glad to hear, as a developer I know how hard and complex is to program in a multi-processor environment. Sony really need to make the next PlayStation easy to program in order to reduce the costs of the games.

I didn't know you were a developer!

So no CELL in the PS3 confirmed then, good to know.

Do you mean PS4?

yup...

Editing now

I would hope they will at least have the CELL in the PS4 for the sake of backwards compatibility. Like they did with the PS2's Emotion chip at the start of the PS3's generation.

far to expensive as they learnt this gen, they quickly dropped that to save money, maybe there will be a premium model but I doubt it.

You don't think they will make the same stupid mistakes as they did this gen do you? They are already avoiding one in making the system developer friendly.

This gen maybe.  But don't you think the Cell will be "old" tech by next gen?  So the "smart" move will be to use "old" tech which the Cell could be classified as by that time.  And won't more developers will be more familiar with its architecture better by then?

why use expensive hard to develop for old tech instead of powerful relatively easy to program for tech? Just because they are familia with the tech doesn't mean that it is easy to use.

You must be some kind of industry insider who knows that there will be something specifically new on the horizon that's very powerful AND VERY easy for developers to jump into.  What is it?

Hackers are poor nerds who don't wash.

My prediction for PS4 has always been that it would be very similar Hardware wise to the PS3 now.

It would obviously have more RAm and all that tech stuff.

But developing games for it would be largely similar to what it's like now.

I hope that prediction comes true, and we don't see countless shoddy ports on PS4!

lol a traditional CPU designed today would be more powerful in most of the ways that count (the cell is unmatched in the CPU space of encoding video) and easier to develop for than the complex and full of bottlenecks CELL architecture.

A modern GPU would make up the difference and then some in the areas that the CELL excels at, video encoding, effects rendering and physics. So yea more powerful and easier to develop for as existing tools and techniques will be compatible.

Wow.  Last time I checked, a lot of developers praised Apple with going to an Intel based processor and abandoning the PowerPC processor because these developers were more familiar with the Intel based processors while more powerful versions of those processors were being made and released.  So what if there were more advanced and powerful Cell processors that can be used for the PS4 while allowing developers to not have to have such a relatively steep learning curb with another kind of processor?  Nothing wrong with sticking with something you have learned to be familiar with provided that the power behind the newer processors are current for its time.  So nothing specific, huh?

didn't you hear no one is developing the CELL any more, IBM considered it a dead end in processor design. most developers are more versed in IBM/Motorola RISC chips and x86 processors than the CELL. The reason devs preferred INTEL chips over the power series is that it would mean they would have to do far less work when porting windows apps to mac and vice versa.

At the time the power series was to power hungry and ran to hot that and they were more expensive meant if apple wanted competitive laptops they needed to find an alternative.

EDIT why would I have something specific when the PS4 probably won't be released until 2012 the hardware that will be available probably hasn't been announced yet. All I could is speculate what they might use in the next 6 months or so, which would be pointless.
