Sony:
Resistance
Resistance 2
Resistance 3
SOCOM: US Navy Seals Confrontation
SOCOM 4
Killzone 2
Killzone 3
Warhawk
MAG

Microsoft:
Halo 3
Halo 3 ODST
Halo Reach
Gears of War (also on PC)
Gears of War 2
Gears of War 3
Left 4 Dead (also on PC, published by Valve)
Left 4 Dead 2 (also on PC, published by Valve)

So that's 9 to 8 Sony or 9 to 5 Sony if you wanna discount the "console exclusives." What does everyone else think of Dille's comments? Is it coincidental that they were made the release of Halo Reach?

But considering sales, XB360 relies on them more than most other platforms, the top 3 XB360 sellers are shooters, and a total 7 out of the Top 10 are too, while on PS3 the current top seller and the 3rd are shooters, and a total 4 out of the top 10 are too, so they are undeniably important for PS3 too, but not as overwhelmingly as for XB360.

I'm not sure if you realize it, but the only difference between those top 3 / 10 you listed is Halo and Gears. Yes, Gears and Halo sell higher than any PS3 exclusive released, but we already knew that.

If you look down a bit further, say, the top 20, the consoles even out. The 360 doesn't have a single shooter in its top 11-20 sellers.

Besides what others answered you (and that partially overlaps logically with what I'm going to write), that the situation is more even in the top 20, but with more shooters in the top 10 for XB360 means that they rank higher, on average, on XB360. I avoided stretching it to say that XB360 relies on Halo and Gears because I thought that besides exaggerating (they are very important, but CoD series is increasing its importance a lot), it could be considered quite trollish.

Anyhow, I have no problems to admit (I already did in my previous post) that shooters are important for PS3 too, top and 3rd seller, and 4 in the top 10 is a presence quite heavy.

But my point was only that besides all the usual PR BS, there was a base of truth, IMVHO.

I figured now would be as good of a time as any to debate the perception of the 360 as a "shooterbox." Peter Dille didn't exactly say that, but it's directly implied with his comments about Microsoft.

Anyway my take is that this is pretty ironic considering that the PS3 has more exclusive shooters and more shooters published by Sony than the 360 has by Microsoft.

Taking a gander at the list:

Sony:
Resistance
Resistance 2
Resistance 3
SOCOM: US Navy Seals Confrontation
SOCOM 4
Killzone 2
Killzone 3
Warhawk
MAG

Microsoft:
Halo 3
Halo 3 ODST
Halo Reach
Gears of War (also on PC)
Gears of War 2
Gears of War 3
Left 4 Dead (also on PC, published by Valve)
Left 4 Dead 2 (also on PC, published by Valve)

Its not about who has more shooters, its about 360 having a much higher percentage of shooters and relying on them for sales, whereas Sony has other genred games like Heavy Rain, Ratchet and Clank, LittleBigPlanet and more.

10 of the top 20 360 games are shooters. 11 of the top 20 ps3 games are shooters.

When PS3 has more in it's top 20 can't really criticise Microsoft in my opinion. Seems a bit silly.

Yes, great indeed...

One thing that makes me laugh is that he's particularly proud that he can be madder than the average of artists of his generation without any use of drugs!

From what I read, Turn 10 basically claimed they developed a better racer. They hardly crapped on GT.

From what I remember, they threw a number of digs on separate occasions, and topped it off with jaw dropping arrogance.  Both companies hurl crap.  We make it more serious than it is.

Turn 10 was definitely a little arrogant, but their comments weren't that bad. They even praised the GT series.

The guys from Turn 10 are dicks and they have made some pretty bad comments...

"Which could explain why the GT franchise has been so stagnant in the racing genre since GT3."

“I don’t know if Move is going to bomb, but at this point, nobody gives a shit. Even Sony fans would rather talk about Kinect.”

"It’s an unfortunate time in the world of gaming; one of my favorite developerswas caught with a little bit of red paint on their hands, hence making them red-handed in an outward attempt to fix a recent poll being held on CNET regarding Forza Motorsport 3 and Polyphony Digital’s Gran Turismo 5." Referring to Turn 10 trying to rig a poll.

But Hartman sees GT5 as more of a theory than reality. "I haven't heard a ship date. So I'm really not worried about it until I hear a ship date."

They've said and done alot more stuff, don't act as if one company is innocent over another.

The first one seems pretty legit, but the second one, accusing them of rigging a poll by giving incentives to people to vote for them is dumb as all get out. Just about everyone does that, in fact, Epic's doing it right now with RAAM in that Gamespot poll, by offering a greater EXP weekend the futher along he gets. Trying to make a big deal about that is dumb.

Yeah that's true, but all that means is shooters are the best selling games in the world on PS3 and 360.Its exclusives that the Sony guy is taling about.

360's top 10 exclusives are: Halo 3, Gears, Gears 2, Halo ODST, Forza 2, Fable 2, Forza 3, Left 4 Dead, Left 4 Dead 2 and Call of Duty 2. That's 7 out of 10.

PS3's top 10 exclusives are: MGS4, GT5P, Resistance, LBP, Uncharted 2, Motorstorm, Uncharted, God of War, Killzone 2, R&C Tools of Destruction. That's 5 out of 10.

So after looking at it yeah the 360 is extremely reliant on shooters but so is PS3, just not to the same extent.

Yes Microsoft is reliant on shooter, but to a lesser degree Sony is too

Well cosidering their line up in the past and their known line up for the immediate future, he is spot on :)

It doesn't contradict his statement if Sony has more shooters.  Sony has more of EVERYTHING.  They just make more and more varied games.

Microsoft's actually published more racers, RPGs, sandbox and strategy games than Sony so far this gen.  Sony's published more shooters, platformers, sims, sports, adventure and casual/party games though.

Wouldn't development be a better gauge here than publishing?

why would development be more important than publishing?  if you took out publishing than the only fps game that microsoft developed was halo 3.  After that bungie split.  Gears is made by epic.  Everything else Microsoft has made are racing, party, platforming, or sim games.  Which would defeat the whole argument of this thread.

I was under the impression that using publishing instead of developing made it seem like Microsoft made the same amount of games as Sony or more, but I could be mistaken.  I was more talking about overall games, sorry for the off topicness of the comment.  :(

Awwww poor Peter Dill...

Head of marketing in SCEA... i.e. Head of the the console that is coming a distant third in his territory.  Seems he is feeling the pressure and isnt very good at his job, so he decides to talk shite.

Poor fella.

Other Dille snippets from 2007 (who how silly he must feel now about the next paragraph)

I don't want to be argumentative, but I take issue with Microsoft either having a long tail, or being profitable, because they've never done either. They've never made a dime in this business, number one, and number two, they've never had a tail. They've never been successful enough to have a tail! So the notion of a back half of the curve doesn't exist for them. They stopped the Xbox and I kind of feel for the guy that bought an Xbox the month before they said 'we're out of business, we're moving on.'

With the Xbox 360 you've got an inconsistent design, some have a hard drive, some don't, and none of them have Blu-Ray, and the HD-DVD will be out of business in a matter of months. Is this a 10 year product? And by the way, it doesn't even work. Do they want to be selling it for 10 years and refurbishing them all for 10 more years? I don't think that's a 10 year product. You could disagree with me, or they could disagree with me, but I'd put that up against the PS3 any day.

LOL!!!  MS really have him rattled... I bet he doesnt sleep very well...  poor baby.

Incidentally are FPS games any less worthy than  other genres?

Those comments have hardly stood the test of time. Do Peter Dill comments run on the 10 week plan? I.E. He hopes people forget about them in 10 weeks?

The current Xbox 360 sales and profitability kinda put both those bolded and underlined segments to shame.

Tease.
